Im looking to buy my first dslr and was wondering what you pro's considered a good starting camera.
i.e is sony an option or is it better to go for nikkon or canon? I'm looking for something that will last me a while as im a complete novice.
Having read a few reviews etc im being steared towards nikkon at the moment.
Any help will be much appreciated.
Cheers

Loads of great cameras out there the Sony's are doing really well.
You need to handle some as you need to feel confident holding it some can feel too small or too big.
I got my older Nikon D50 rather than the D40 etc as it has a internal motor so if a lens comes up that has no motor but has auto focus i can use it but the newer starter nikon Cameras have to have a motor in the lens as no motor in the body.
We all hanker after a better camera but personally you are better spending your money on better lenses than loads on the camera and not having money for better lenses down the line although a lot of kit lenses are rather good.
Sorry if seam to contradict myself, welcome to the forum.
What type of shots are you after because the big cost of photography comes with wanting to do so many things Macro, Wildlife/aviation, portraiture etc etc.
The Sony Alpha 200 and 350 do well the 200 model is cheaper and possibly more so now that the 350 is realy to replace it so thats the sony angle.
Cannon is the 1000D i think.
Nikon is the D60 in that price area but what is your price area if thats not rude but will enable other to advice you better and please dont be ashamed just say what you can confortablly afford as there will always be something in your price field.

I think a lot depends on what you want to do with it. Think about what you want to shoot and then look at the features of each camera and what will benefit you. i.e if you are into motorsport then something with a high frames per second rate will be more inportant than say a high ISO. This would also help with body/lens combinations. Find out what you want to do with it then ask on here again with a more specific question. I would also suggest that you give us an idea of budget you have.

Welcome to the forum!!

Hey there,

I bought my first DSLR about a month back, i did some reading then went into Jessops and had a mess about with each Camera within my price range.

I ended up with the Sony A300, it's a great camera.

Check out my Flickr for my shots so far and I'm still on the steep end of the learning curve.

For £500 I picked up the A300 with 18-75mm kit lens, a 55-200mm lens, a camera bag and a 4GB CF card for £500. Take whatever you're willing to spend with you in cash and don't go over it. Explain to them that you have X amount of money in your pocket, then ask what deal then can do for you.

PS - The A300 is exclusive to Jessops.

thanks for replys
will be 90% still i.e landscape.
budget will be around £300
looking at that price range nikkon d40 or sony a200 seem to be my options unless theres something i missed

gonna be a nikon d60 i think. its the one that stands out from the crowd.
having upped my budget already (available from argos £342 with 18-55 AF-S lens) is it worth the extra for the vr lens kit version?

I have a canon but my sister has this camera with the kit lens, and it's a decent bit of kit... It lets you get a feel for the camera, it's quite flexible and then when you find what sort of shooting you do you can purchase a new lens... better than doing what a lot of people do and jumping in the deep end buying every lens they can think of without thinking "do I need it"

You will probably find that for a good while the kit lens will do everything you want it to and eventually will probably get a second lens with more 'Reach' before you replace this one.
