a few of my friends are doing a motorcycle track day at oulton park in exactly a weeks time. they want me to get a few snaps of them.

i have a sony alpha a200 and im just about to buy a Minolta 75-300 lens for it.

could someone give me some tips on settings and posture etc.

i've never photographed fast moving subjects so any tips would be greatfull

cheers

well panning takes practice.

For settings use you camera in TV (shutter prority)

Start off with a high shutter speed 1/600+ and see how you go, as the day goes on slowy bring it down prob best keep it above 1/200 though.

Depending on light/weather you want ISO 100/200 but you may have to go 400

Shoot in RAW for editing later.

Turn your auto foucus on your camera to AI servo.

Kepp you feet apart and balance yourself and swing through hips (i sound like Mr Motorvator!) lol

You'll probably find somewhere around 1/200 is fine once you get the hang of it. Watch your DOF, as I often found you'd get a helmet nicely but then a section of the bike would be out, ruining the photo.

Remember with panning to follow through as you click the shutter and then afterwards too!

For Oulton Park there are a few good spots, especially with the reach of your 300.

Firstly for ease of access get yourself a spot on the pit wall - people generally go slower in the early sessions too which helps. Stand about half way down and point yourself towards the crest of the hill so you can follow as early as possible.

Next I usually head over to Knickerbrook (you'll have to walk across the infield and over the bridge at Clay Hill) where you can get some nice shots of the exit from Hislop's and then up the hill.

For the end of the day when folks are getting more adventurous I head over to Lodge. This is quite a tricky off-camber corner and so usually most riders will take it slowly until they build their confidence - hence leaving it to the end of the day! You can get very close to the corner giving some excellent photo opportunities.

You may find that people notice you and start waving, which is always fun!

Just take it slowly and work on the panning - once you get the hang of it you'll be sorted. And have fun! Your friends will love the photos... mine always do!
