I currently have a Slik pro 400DX and it's weighing me down! My Panasonic weighs under 800g with the everyday lens attached so I'm looking for something that can take up to around 1.5Kg, and preferably twist grip legs.

Can I get something lightweight without spending a fortune on carbon fibre or having to have lots of fragile plastic?

Depends what you class as cheap, stable would be more useful certainly.
 
If you buy cheap you likely lose out on the most important factor - stability! I'd suggest going down the CF route.
 
I recently bought a benro carbon fiber travel angel 1681 for 200 quid or so and I don't think I'll ever need/use another tripod. Its stable enough for serious use and packs small that I can actually travel with it.

For much cheaper, have a look at the aluminum models 0681 or 1681. Weighs about 1.2kg and can be had about 130quid from dc-stuffs on ebay.
