No
than a 17-70 Sigma. I love this lens but whilst at the WRC Opening in Llandudno it really fell short of what I needed. So suggestions open as to what I might be able to add to my bag that will add a bit of reach and speed at the long end in Nikon mount. Anything film era and manual focus is fine too.

Ready, Steady... let war commence! :gag:

Budget? well you can exclude anything Nikon branded but anything else should be fair game.

How wide do you need to be?

Other option I can think of would be some sort of 25-105 or 70-200.

Don't care about the wide end much, can use the Sigma for that, but definitely needs a longer reach and be f2.8

Sigma 70-200 F2.8, can also use a 1.4x when needed for extra reach. About 400-450 used.

Sigma 120-300 2.8 OS would be worth a shout then...:)

Otherwise, I've had a Sigma 70-200 2.8 HSM II and a Nikon 70-300 VR. Both great lenses, the Sigma probably being more useful for you if rallying is regularly going to be on the menu, VR being no substitute for shutter speed when things are moving fast.

Yes something 70-200 would probably be about right, I certainly have no need of VR, it's shutter speed and DOF I'm primarily after, I can get a good F8 photo from any of the long crappy kit lenses. What is there in the way of a 135mm f2.8 or thereabouts?

Whatever is in your budget in the way of a 70-200 f/2.8.

I would (and did) go for the Sigma one as the best compromise between ultimate quality, weight and cost. IIRC, I even bought it second hand but did so through bricks'n'mortar rather than mail or web shopping so I could satisfy myself as to the condition before forking over the folding.
