Yes
would point out i am PC illiterate......:gag:

ok..dont have a lot of photos but they are special [ mine and old family B&W]

been backing up 'Docs' and 'Pictures' onto 2 DVDs each month - keeping current and last month..............and discarding the previous one [ ie #3]

BUT bought a 300GB external Samsung hard drive
copied ALL the folders under D:\john [which includes Docs and Pictures]

so far ok......:D

but this morning - formatted the external HD [ hours and hours....:shake:] and again copied D:\john

instinct says this is incorrect.............can I find a 'simple' way of adding 'new' files and folders, and overwriting 'old' files which have been changed

KISS................

Try using SyncToy it's a free download from Microsoft. You can then get it to link from your computer hard drive to your external. After being run once it will then only change files that have been modified created.

thanks ...will have a look

being lazy/busy i want something i can click 'back-up all new/modified files'....:D

Yup Microsoft synctoy here too

I have simple one click setups to syncronise all the files on my 2 internal scratch drives. To backup my documents to one of my externals, then Syncronise my 2 externals.

So I have 4 copies of all my important stuff. All sorted with a few clicks.

:D

found a few tutorials to read tonight ....thanks

will i have to format my external HDD [again..!] so Sycntoy starts off with a clean slate [so to speak..?]

Might be worth doing a quick format because otherwise you will copy everything on the external back to your main pc if you don't.

If you set up a file on your external just for synctoy and then match that with your main drive then you can use the rest of the drive for whatever you want.

I will be copying HDD to external only ... never access external to change/delete any files/data

so it looks as if...

1... reformat external

2....synch left folders.................................. to right folders [external]

3...henceforth use "Echo" to update the external folders

thanks again all
