Hi guys,


I want to do some 'nanny cam' videos of my dogs while i am at work. I am curious what they get up to when we aren't around. I would need to record 4 hours of video (6 ideally). The camera doesn't need to be concealable obviously, but small is always nice. Inexpensive is nicer.

As an add on, i am considering a gopro for a holiday/diving trip as well as an adventure mud race. If the gopro does the dog video too (i am concerned about battery life) then i am happy getting one thing. If there is a dedicated dog video camera that fits the above and is cheap i could get both. Any recommendations?

Could you plug any existing camera into a computer / laptop and do some time lapse?

Or just get a cheap USB webcam??
 
I didn't want to go down a webcam route as it is reliant on the computer and software. I would rather have the camera do it all.

Does a go pro still record if plugged into a USB power source?

Do you leave the dogs indoors or outdoors when you're at work?

Are they in the one room most of the time?

You'd probably want more than one if they're free to roam about through different rooms.

I got a JVC Adixxion cam recently. Pretty cheap, £150. Not sure yet how long the battery lasts on a full charge, but it can record for up to 4hrs straight , I believe. Quality isn't amazing for the supposed full HD 1080p. I just got it for fun. But it is water, shock, drop and something else proof [it says Quad proof on it, can't think what the other thing is]

You get wee mounts for it that you can stick to just about any surface, with a ball head so you can swivel and angle it to your liking.
 
techmoan on youtube has reviewed tons of cheap action cams, worth looking at some of his vids

They are indoors. They have 'run of the house' with a few doors closed to bedrooms and such. I wouldn't mind 2 camereas, thus why cheap was a prerequisite. I wouldn't consider £150 'cheap' through. I was thinking more like the £40-£50 cameras (like the muvi mini or similar). If I am going to spend £150, I'll just get the gopro.

Ah righty. I got that one because it's waterproof without the need for housing and has an LCD screen with live view. I suppose those features don't count in this situation. No idea on the cheaper ones, sorry.
