Need advice for good lens, please

which lens came with the camera

or did you just buy a body..?

Hi everyone, I bought Nikon d3000 and would like to buy a good lens. Mainly I want to use it for making portraits. Which is the best? Thank you for your time!

Best? The new 85mm f/1.4 AF-S will be pretty good, you might want to give an indication of how much you have available to spend if that is a bit dear for you though...;)

Nikon 18-70mm is a nice lens.... Quite cheap as well

Can be had for around the £100-£125 mark...

It came with Nikon 18-55mm non VR zoom lens

dont know if you are "New Here" or "New to photography"

if the later, there is nothing wrong with the 55mm focal length to begin with

if you are indoors, you may need to look at a "faster" lens

For something like a D3000 my choice would be something relatively light, in no particular order....

Tamron 17-50 f/2.8 (the newer version with the built in motor)
Nikon 50mm f/1.4 AF-S
Nikon 35mm f/1.8 AF-S
Nikon 50mm f/1.8 AF (manual focus on the D3000)

Personally out of that lot I'd go for the Tamron as it's nice and light, tack-sharp and not as restrictive as the other fixed focal length (prime) lenses in the list.

Select "galleries" at top of the page - select "upload photo's" - browse to find the picture you want - make sure its under 200kb & about 800x600 (no doubt be corrected on that) - then it will say if its loaded then select the linked image text (just copy paste) an then just paste that onto the page....

Does that sound easier enough - or have I missed out anything

No doubt someone will add something else or say it an entirely different way...

Thanks Trig's.

 Your welcome ..... Glad to see that it was easy to understand

Get a good fast 50mm prime lens -they are usually of very good quality as they are relatively inexpensive to make. on your camera it will be equivalent to around 80mm, which happens to be the traditional focal length for portraits. no better way to start. If you buy zoom you will soon start wanting a much faster lens to blur the background and improve image quality. If you feel adventurous, look at the manual lenses as well - like Leica summicron-r and Contax or Zeiss 50mm ones! they can be adopted on nikon and are better regarded than other lenses.

:), just noticed you have already bought one. Well, I will be curious to know if you do follow my advice in a year or so.
