Need help buying my first lens

I recently got a canon 450d with the 18-55 lens, I'm new to photography and after a few trips out, including a nice day out in london, I've decided that i think i need another lens and would like some advise on a zoom lens to buy. I have looked at Canon EF 70-300mm F4-5.6 IS USM and Canon EF 70-200mm f4L USM also open to any other suggestions, thanks in advance
