hi

I've been asked to take pictures of a family party in a restaurant, 7pm next week.
there are 8 of them but the focus is on the birthday boy and his girlfriend.
they also want some pix taken as they arrive in the limo and inside it with all the disco lights.
so.... never done this before, im more used to studio lighting and scenery, macro, glamour stuff...

help... I have a 50mm prime, 15-85, 18-135 on a canon 60d, a couple of speedlights and one of those little speedlight softboxes (I'm guessing I won't be able to use a brolly as it will be busy and fast moving).

all tips really appreciated.....

50mm prime will be your friend. use the speedlight with the little softbox.

for the limo shot inside you will need one of the wide zooms to get the whole interior in.

I would go the 15-85 as 50mm is going to be long on a crop body in a restaurant to get much in. In the restaurant I would also forget the soft box and bounce diagonal backwards/up/sideways to give a direction of light with the camera in manual set to a bit below ambient (your choice how much but 1.5-2 stops is a good starting point.) You usually need to add some positive flash compensation, so play around to see what works.

Got to be 15-85 with flash. Bounce flash as much as possible, if not then you might get some use out of your mini softbox.

thanks :)
my worry is that flash in the limo might brighten it too much and lose the dark ambience and the disco lights..... or will it be ok?

what flash re you using (swivel head)? might be hard to get anything but a direct flash shot so your little softbox might be the best option. you might be able to direct some light off of some glass as there will be plenty of that (which you also need to be careful of getting rbounds in the shots).
