Need another decent camera and lens,
Got around £500 to spend, at Currys/PCWorld Any ideas of which camera and decent lens to get?? Main use will be photos at Dog Shows like Crufts ect.

What do you have already? £500 isn't a large budget so you might be better off upgrading what you have rather than buying another one.
 
For most "Normal" people, £500 is a hugh amount of doe for "Just a camera".

One third for a camera and two thirds for one or maybe a second lens as well, (If that's the way you want to go). Camera's get updated very often, lenses last for years and years. Wait until the January sales at least, and consider second hand. There will be loads of folk getting rid of this years model replaced by next years at Christmas. You don't need the latest-greatest if your a beginer, and if your not, then you probably have some idea of what you want.

Go micro four thirds, yea!

What do you already have Kevin ?

If you need another camera and lens, then I'd be looking to stay with the same make as you've already got, so you can swap lenses etc...

And do you want to go DSLR route or other route ???

Don't have one at the moment but my last one was d3100, Is there much difference between D3300, D5200 and D5300 cameras that I as a beginner would notice? or would the difference make my photos better??
Also if I were to go for the cheaper d3300 which lens would be good for the Dog Show photos?? rather than the kit lens?? would like to get some good shots of the dogs moving also some really close up Macro type shots too.
 
I know you say DSLR but for your needs and budget have you considered a Panasonic LX100?

I'd be looking at a telephoto lens for dog shows, although of course I've no idea how close you'll be. I don't think you want macro shots for dogs. Close ups yes, macro no.

Hi Kevin

Obvious option is to stay with Nikon as this is what you are used to, but if you have nothing presently, pop along to a good camera shop or Curry's / PCW (Do you have vouchers for there ?) and have a try out of other makes / models and see if there is one you prefer ...

Can't help you with specifics on the Nikon bodies though, as I'm a Canon bod.

For a dog show, you'd probably need a telephoto lens - something like a 70-300 lens to be able to get close up shots, but obviously this depends on how near you can get to the dogs...The kit lens tends to be around the 18-50 range, sometimes they do a twin lens kit, which includes a longer zoom - 55-250 / 70-300 for example...
 
I went from a d3100 to a d7000 a few years ago and couldn't see any difference in image quality. It's better for access to the menus.

Whether the 5300 is "better" I couldn't say

The 70-300VR is a great lens
 
I just got a d3300 and the image quality is fantastic. For dog shows the better af system of the d5300 would be better, but you can still get great results with the d3300.

Erm this is not always true. If you're a sports shooter for example a more sophisticated autofocus system may make more of a difference than a lens, or likewise if you're a low light shooter then a camera with better ISO handling may make more difference.

Unless you have an amazing lens, then a better lens will always be better.

Faster lenses will have autofocus.
A faster lens will mean you can use lower ISO and help low light focussing,

We'll agree to disagree. Whilst there's no denying a better lens will give you better results than an inferior lens, I don't agree that getting a better lens will always be better than getting a better body. For example, if I was a sports shooter using say a 70-300mm and had a camera with a 9 point AF system and only centre point cross type with no 3D tracking and found I was getting a lot of missed and/or out of focus shots I'd give serious consideration to upgrading to a camera with something like a 51 point AF system with numerous cross type AF points and had 3D tracking capability before upgrading the lens to say a 70-200mm f2.8.

Yes this is a very specific example but I'm just using it to illustrate my point ;)
 
Take advantage of the Xpro1 with 18mm f2 , 27mm f2.8 & leathercase for £499 - you won't find a better deal atm for any camera. You could sell the primes for a zoom if need be.

But if you need to maintain a certain depth of field, you can't use a wider aperture. So your best upgrade might be a camera which can cope better at high ISO, rather than a faster lens.
 
It sounds like he doesn't have anything to upgrade currently, so this is rather moot.

Not at all. If you can buy a basic camera and lens for £500, but you have a budget of £700, then it makes perfect sense to talk about whether your extra £200 would be best spent upgrading the camera or the lens.
 
Oh I'm sorry, is this a five minute argument, or the full half hour?
 
I must have missed the point; he doesn't have a £700 budget as far as I can see. At £500 and with these requirements it's surely just a case of finding the most appropriate kit deal.
 
Kevin, as you don't currently have any gear at the mo I'd suggest buying these. The two lenses give you scope to take most things, the telephoto being useful for dog shows.

If you can stretch the budget a little, or happy to buy 2nd hand then you could buy this bundle instead of the D3300 and would get an even better package, although the only main differences are more AF points, flip out screen, WIFI and GPS on the D5300. If those things don't matter to you save your cash and get the D3300. The more AF points, including more cross type would be useful for dog shows though imo.

I have just bought nikon 55-200mm and I am very pleased so far, but for £200 you could get the Nikon or tamron 70-300mm :)
 
I've just lowered the price of my d7000 in classifieds if you're interested. Will give you a good camera with money left over for decent lens
 
buy used, (D610 if you can find one) and a 70 300mm f4.5/f5.6 VR Nikon, for dog shows
 
OK After all the cameras mentioned in this thread, ive decided to go for this http://www.pcworld.co.uk/gbuk/cameras-camcorders/digital-cameras/dslr-and-compact-system-cameras/nikon-d7200-digital-slr-camera-with-18-105-mm-f-3-5-5-6-zoom-lens-black-10124392-pdt.html I know its not the budget stated with but done a lot of research the last week or so and kept coming back to it.
Anyway went to PC World today and this Kit has just came out of stock, they do have the Body but could not decide which lens to get, the store I went to did not have much choice as they were short on lenses, so going to try another local store tomorrow, they said they will have to wait from Nikon to either put the package and kit back on offer or make another kit up with the D7200.
Anyone recommend which lens to get if I decide to get the body? also how long will It take Nikon to get the Kit or another back on offer??

Would help if we knew what your budget is tbh as obviously you've stepped that up quite a bit (D7200 is an excellent choice btw)?

The Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 would be a great short zoom, and then a Nikon/Tamron 70-300mm

The lens is out of stock as from today so if I get he body only will need to choose a different one or wait and see if it comes back in.
 
Currys very rarely hold stock for anything worth having, get to jessops or something, or order online
