Need New Tripod

I'm off to Iceland for 3 night at the end of next week and have decided it might be time to get a new tripod as I've been using my Dad's very old and very heavy one.

I want one that will be able to take a Canon 7D and my heaviest lens is the Canon 100-400 IS. I also want one that will be lite enough to carry around on hikes etc.

Another consideration is my brother has a big sturdy video tripod that is metal and got a big dent in the leg after going through Heathrow baggage inside his suitcase. If it has been carbon I'm sure it would have smashed it to pieces so I really want one that is quite tough.

I'm not looking for anything too fancy and my budget is about £100 only. It would be nice if I could get a ball-head as well all for £100 all-up.


Any suggestions?

At that kind of money you really don't have much choice other than a red snapper.

i also have a redsnapper tri-283 and ballhead and very please with it and it can take alot of weight and isnt to heavy itself, if you go onto the site and give joe a ring he's a very nice helpful chap and im sure he will answer any questions that you do have...........;)

You have 3 requirements for a tripod: light, sturdy, and cheap (relatively for tripods anyway). You can only get 2 of those however in any one model unfortunately!

For that price I'd suggest redsnapper (it's what I'll be getting when funds allow). It won't be as light as you want, but I don't think you can get carbon fibre tripods for £100? SOmone correct me if I'm wrong though!

Buy at that price and you'll buy a dozen in your lifetime! Up your budget to £500+ and you'll buy only once!

This was my choice: Gitzo GT2531LVL Tripod with Acratech GV2 head - never looked back - and won't ever need to buy another!

We dont all have budgets of £500+
 
The Redsnapper one looks good for the money. Any comments on build quality compared to the mainstream brands?

The idea spot on but I really don't have any more money than about £100 right now. ;)
 
Ive had my tri-283 and ball head over 2 years now and never had any probs with it so far, very solidly built and even comes and a great bag with a nice comfortable padded strap, you wont be dissapointed...........:D
 
I've got the redsnapper CF plus ball head and it holds a 50D, 2X convertor & 100-400 lens just fine. Use the hook on the centre pole to weigh it down with your camera bag if you want rock stable. It's light and the bag with elastic strap makes it feel even lighter still, which means it gets carried rather than left behind.

Manfrotto owners who have had a play with my Redsnapper kit have been very impressed.

Over the years I've had everything from the £10 Tesco special to £50 Jessops own brand, the Rednsnapper kit is in a completely different league :)
 
Does the Redsnapper have an adjustable center column that can adjust to 90 degrees to the tripod?

You don't need £500 for that combo. You need £750 (£450 + £300).
 
Another vote for the redsnapper if that is your budget. I've got an old Manfrotto which weighs a ton but it's solid as a rock but i've borrowed a friends redsnapper and was very impressed.

I posted a thread about lightweight and compact tripods and the Velbon Ultra LUXi series was recommended to me.
I'm looking at getting the LUXi-L ll as it can hold 3kg.
These look idea for a travel tripod.
I've owned a Redsnapper 283 Alloy 3-Section Tripod and although it's a very good piece of kit, I think it's a bit too heavy and not compact enough for travel use.
