I've been asked to shoot my girlfriends mothers birthday party, having never shot people before, and odds on the light will be pretty poor, can I get some advice on what I should be looking to do settings wise etc... Its a garden party, all evening so varying light, there's also a marquee. Kit wise I have...

Canon 7D

50mm f1.8

100-400 L

17-85 IS/USM

430exII Flash

Should I be okay? Any advice? What should I do! There isn't much pressure since they aren't too fussed about it but I'd like to give it a proper go.

Kit sounds perfect to me. Bang the ISO up later in the night, have a drink, and don't stop shooting :D

^^ What he said - don't forget to have fun and put the camera down once in a while - otherwise you're just 'that guy with the camera'...

True.

So to flash or not to flash, every time I've used that ropey pop up flash on my cameras it's just blown everything out pretty poorly, haven't even tried the 430exII yet, I only got it this morning.

Diffuser for the flash, set it to auto (with 2nd curtain thingy if you want) and I usually shot it upwards but that is inside so bouces of the ceiling. I shoot on manual, 1/180sec and 5.6 app, can go lower or higher depending on if its a group or solo pic. ISO500.
Works ok for me but I'm still learning. 50mm is good but annoying as you might want some range, so I'd use the 17-85. Practice beforehand with similar conditions if possible and play around with settings.

430x vs pop up = 10000000000000x better, seriosuly I NEVER use the pop-up its horrible, if you HAD to then turn it down via the cameras menu settings.

The 430 is ace, love mine, could not be without it when I shoot inside/night, get a diffuser though, just the basic cover one is fine.

check your wb..either auto or check out some settings before hand
