Hi all, I have an Olympus e-420 that I really like, but with the amount of new features cameras have now, I'm thinking of possibly changing for something different. I mainly take pictures of my family, and some nature/macro shots that I've shared on here.. I paid £300 for the e-420 over a year ago and now they are fetching about £200 so I will make a loss, but I've seen some compacts that have some really interesting features for less than £200.. Is it worth trading in a DSLR for a compact? Is there a compact worth buying? General thoughts on this? Any advise would be greatly apprichiated.
 
I would rather chew my hand off than go back to a compact as my main camera.:eek:

I love being able to crop in on a photo, something you would have to watch on a small sensor compact................:nono:

But it sounds like you don't do much Post Processing ,if you would be happy with the limitations of the point and shoots,now is the time to trade.

Are you interested in photography or do you just want happy snaps?

If it's the 1st, keep your dslr. If its the 2nd, well...

I'm very interested in Photography - but Its not what I'm studying and I have no plans to make a career out of it. Simply, nice shots & family portraits. I've just been looking at the Cannon SX210 IS compact, which is one of jessops most popular and looks like it has far better features than my own.. I donno..
 
It surprises me that you are into photography but want to ditch your dslr in favour of a compact? I can't think why anyone would want to do that tbh!

A dslr isn't just for professionals and students!

What lenses do you have for your current camera? I think coming from your present camera to a compact you'll feel very restricted. And what features from the compact attract you to it?

I understand what your saying, but I feel very restricted at the moment as I don't think I have the finances to buy new lenses or invest in more equipment.. I'm using an olympus e-420 with a 14-42mm lens. Compared to the Cannon SX210 IS that has a 14x optical zoom, is 14mp, and has HD video recording, I feel I'm missing out somewhat.. Like I say, I'm interested in photography & I like my macro's and landscapes, but why can't a well priced compact produce those as well as have more features and be much smaller? Am I buying into the cannon's marketing and the SX210 IS isn't as good as they are making out? Or am I right in thinking that the SX210 IS would be able to offer me more than my e420? I don't know.. I'm sure there are other compacts out there as well that offer similar maybe even better features than the SX210..
 
The simple fact is a properly used dslr will always produce much better results than a compact.

The sensor is smaller on the compact and more prone to noise. Forget about the increased mp count, that doesnt mean much unless you intend to heavily crop, and the zoom, it's nice, but you are Forever stuck with it, it's a jack of all trades master of none. Dont get me wrong, the canon is a lovely compact, and video is handy if you want it, but you'll get far better results from your dslr if you get the most out of it.

Why don't you put your money Towards a nice telephoto?
 
I understand what your saying - I've been looking through a load of compact sample photos even from some of the top compacts that are out of my price range & the quality doesen't even come close to some of the shots I've taken.. So I'm sticking with the SLR & I'll have to save up & get myself a decent lens.
