Need some advive on lens combo.

Hi all,
At the moment I have a nikon 70-200 vr1 and TCx2III so that gives me 400mm, I would like a longer lens but really don't want to be carrying to much, so would you sell then and buy the sigma 120-300 OS and the sigma x2 converter?! Not sure if that would be better/same IQ etc? Anyone done the same already?! Let me know thanks.

I used the same combination as you on my D90 (and D300) until recently when I sold the 70-200 and bought a Sigma 150-500. No need to use a TC anymore and perfectly good image quality - and some money still in my pocket :)

But did you not miss using a good fast lens in low light?
 
What are you photographing. Remember the 120-300mm about 2.5kgs, so is weight also an issue? I assume as you talking about the sigma, you have a reasonable hefty budget?

Weight doesn't bother me :) but I don't want to carry two lenses. Well I would sell the 70-200 for £950? the TCx2III for £300? So it won't be that much more. I like to shoot wildlife and some surfing, airshows etc
 
I heard some great things about the new 120-300mm f2.8 OS, but a motorsport buff on TP borrowed one and wasn't overly impressed with the lens. I know one bad review doesn't condemn it, but there were issues with the previous versions, several friends have had many issues from back focusing, build quality, autofocus lock in low light etc, so perhaps the quality issues are still around with this new version????.

Then again, several friend swear by this lens and the previous version, so who's to judge.

The sigma 150-500mm and slight more expensive brother 50-500mm OS seems to be getting alot of press and for wildlife on a budget are a good means to 470-480mm with the 50-500mm being the slightly better lens, but I still think for anything else, motorsport, aviation the jury's still out, f6.3 for me would be in the camera bag, because the lens is too slow, even with the OS system the owners are raving about. Anything challenging with failing light and the lens would fall over.

Unfortunately, there's no cheaper options if you decided to go nikon, as the 200-400mm f4 is mega $$$$, then you have the primes which cost you an arm and a leg. Tough decisions.

Perhaps hire out the lens(es) and see which suits you the best for your budget
