Hi everyone,

Im not the best about knowing where to buy equipment from as i've never really been able to afford anything. But for my 21st birthday my parents have said they will buy me a lens. Im using a Nikon D40x and currently have the kit lens and a 55mm-200mm. I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of lenses that would fit my camera and price range of £250 or just good places to have a look for lenses.

I have been looking at the warehouse express website seeing as its only in Norwich and have seen this that I really like, but im not certain whether it will fit my camera;

Thanks in advance

The lens will fit but it will not autofocus as it's not an af-s lens. If you're happy with manual focus then it could be a good choice, although the f/1.8 variant is a lot cheaper (circa £110) and very nearly as good. To help advise on other choices, what do you want to do with your new lens (apart from the obvious :) ) and what is your main genre of photography ?

Thanks for your reply. I would prefer it if it would automatically focus, but it wouldnt be the end of the world. Is there a 50mm af-s? I mainly am a lanscape person, but I do do some classic car show photography as well as general family members and pets.

There is an AFS50mm f1.4 G but it costs £250 ish. It is a really very good lens .

This is the AF-S version...

This is an example of the sort of car shot you can do with a 50mm f1.8:

The f1.4 gives a very shallow depth of field and therefore has to be very precisely composed / focussed.

If you like doing landscape have you thought about an f1.8 and a good tripod and head combo with your budget ?(unless you already have the latter of course)

how about:
1) spending (~£157) on the 35mm 1.8 AF-S
2) spending the rest (~£95) on the SB400 or a good tripod.

The 50 1.4 AF-S cost too much money imo :) (I don't know where can you find it £250, normally I see around £300), I prefer the 50 1.4D (~£210) or the 50 1.8D(~£100). Or if I have to use AF-S, the 35 1.8 would serve me better.

Going for the AF-S version of the 50mm is pushing the budget a bit too far so im going to have to count that lens out :(

intotherainbow - Im really liking the look of the 35mm and the price is good, im going to do a bit of research into it, I have some time as my birthday isnt till September.

Get the AFS35/1.8G -- you'd likely find it more useful than a 50 anyway.

Give Stuart from Digital Depot a PM about the lens when you decide. He is a member on here and does some good prices his user name is "Digital Depot".
