Need some help with choice of lens

Hi peeps I currently have a Nikon 55-200mm f/4.-5.6 AFS DX VR Lens and I am thinking of trading it in for a used Nikon AF-S 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 G ED VR Lens.

Do you think I am wise as my own lens is practically brand new


I hope I am making sense any advice would be much appreciated
 
What do you want to take pictures of? The 55-200 would be lighter, more compact, so more lightly to be around your neck when you want it. The 55-300 is obviously a longer lens but probably not long enough birding etc, but adequate for motor sport shoots. So as a walkabout keep what you've got, as a motor sports could be worth trading up, but for birding etc could be worth waiting for something a little longer. I am assuming image quality is equal, as I use Canon I don't know the quality of these two.

You have posed a simple enough question one would think and understandably so. However there are certain considerations as well. First of all what are you most going to take photos of? mainly stills such as landscapes-action shots such as football ,motor racing - macro shots -I could go on almost forever. all of these and more depend on your choice of lens, so my advise for what its worth is decide what at first you what to shoot the most then decide on the lens and get the best you can afford for that job. Your f4.5-f5.6 is a fairly slow lens so for action shots an f2.8 may suit you better.

Isn't the 70-300 considered a better lens than the 55-300? Maybe that would be a better stepping stone?
 
What do you take pics of the most (or want to take pics of)?

You will still need something at the wide ends (35mm f1.8?) or a short zoom.

Would be better to look around and try a few lenses. May be hire it first, if it costs that much, before purchasing so you can compare.

I haven't got any zooms (used to have an 18-200 mki vr) so I need to zoom with my feet :D so I can't comment on them - The one I had was soft tho especially when compared to a prime.

You could always look at older nikon lenses, or manual and an m42 adapter plus ebay purchase. A few zooms on there going fairly cheap.
