Need some help with Equipment Purchase

Hi Guys

I'm new here and fairly new to photography since taking it up last year. I have a Nikon D70s with the stock lens and also a 55-200 lens.

It's my birthday and I have around £200 to spend on a new bit of kit. Initially I thought of a cheap studio lighting set up from China with a couple of softboxes and a flash umbrella but am worried it will be pretty much a waste of time as I cheaped out and bought a Jessops flash gun instead of a Nikon one and that is just about good enough but has v.slow recycle times and I wished I'd stumped up more and got a Nikon one instead.

Anyhow I was looking at what to spend the money on and wondered if anyone else had any bright ideas? I was thinking maybe a prime lens? Are relatively cheap ones any good? I take lots of different types of photos (www.flickr.com/photos/knlphotos) and would be keen to look at pretty much anything that might give me another area to explore.

Any advice would be very much greatly appreciated!
 
Try and decide what type of photography you want to go for next. Do you need a fast prime for portraits? Or a superwide for landscapes? Give us a clue about your main interest beacuse given your budget, it'll probably only be one item purchased
 
I think I'd probably like to get fast prime for portraits rather than a superwide for landscapes to be honest, the portrait prime will give me opportunities to shoot products and small items with a very shallow DoF too wont it? I think that's what I'd like, the question is am i better off getting the Nikon lens or are there some decent alternatives, the one thing that annoys me about Nikon is that everything is so much more expensive than say, Sony equipment. I do, however,appreciate that you get what you pay for so am i better off shelling out for the Nikkor lens?
 
Looks like you've 2 choices then - a new 50mm f1.8 or a 2nd hand 85mm f1.8. I used to have both and they're both superb, it just comes down to you're preferred working distance - you'll be a little further away with the 85mm, but if thats not a problem, I'd buy that one.
