Need some help with lens - Don't think it's sharp as it should be

I bought a Canon reconditioned 50mm f1.4 lens from the bay from a guy who, before being Thin Lizzy's guitarist!, was a service engineer for Canon UK. He took the lens apart and serviced it completely. I have seen loads of great images from the FD 50mm f1.4 but i'm just not sure about this one. I took a few shots in good light in the garden and at f1.4 it's just not sharp. at f8 it's better but still not great. Am I being a wet weekend in Wiggan or does it just not look sharp?

Really appreciate any help.

Shots were done with camera resting on wooden seat on a timer so no movement.

Shot 1 at f1.4 focused on the pigs nose


Shot 2 at f8 so all the piggy should be pin sharp

are these re-sized by flickr? the 'original' from flickr is very small - can you upload a full size image somewhere?

I just don't see the kind of detail that i would expect from this lens. Maybe I'm just being to pedantic or picky??
 
I agree not fantastc - but it is a grey low contrast subject on a dull overcast day - try a more 'normal' subject in better light.
 
The sun was shining but i was in the shadow of the house. I'll try tomorrow if the sun comes out! :D

Shot in raw, little sharpening in lightroom and maybe a little brightening up i think but not much as i wanted it pretty as is, saved as Jpg in PS to folder then upload to Flickr.

I choose the pig as it has great texture to test lenses so i know it well.
 
On the exif it says that you used your GF1 for the shot - presumably you had to use an adapter to mount the lens on there? Is it one of those adapters with or without glass?

Sorry if it's an obvious question, but everything has to be ruled out before a trip to the lens doctor!

It'd be useful to see a 100% crop from the first shot too, with that being 1/640 as opposed to 1/30 in the second. If it's not sharp with a still camera at 1/640 then it never will be!
 
The one with the green lego star wars figure was on a tripod and that's not great either.

The adapter is one that has no glass.

Here is a 100% crop from the 1st one at f1.4. I focused on the nose.

if you think that ain't sharp you need to have a sigma 28-80 for the day (no offence to current owners of this lens but it sux)

May I suggest you don't drink 7 pints of Guinness before shooting :D

I think it's too much masterba...... you get the drift!! It must be that as i don't drink! :D

Now i have tested it properly i am as happy as a dog with 2 di...di......di...nners!
