Just done a clean install of Windows today.
Loaded all my photo's onto my new 320GB hard drive (with thanks to all on the other thread :D )

JPEG's are ok, but my RAW files no longer have the preview of the picture in the folder.

Let me try to explain better!!!
When I open a folder with JPEG's in, the thumbnail actually shows the shot itself.
My RAW files don't. They just have an icon and NEF label in the thumbnail.

It was ok before I re-formatted and re-installed Windows.........

Does this make sense?

TIA, Andy

Was there a program you previously used to convert your RAW to JPEG? My guess is that it was that program that showed the thumbnails, and since you re-formatted (hence removing the program), it now only shows the NEF label.

If you can remember what program you used, reinstall and it should be fine.

you will probably need to re-download the RAW viewer update for windows. it cant show RAW files as standard.

:agree:

Apparently from your avatar you have a Nikon, but I do know that Canon have RAW viewers for vista. In my case I've installed these and all is good

i have the same issue but one the file in opened in my photo program (corel) preview all is fine. I presumed that this ws a gitch with windows not being able to read the specialised pic info

RAW files have no fixed file structure where as JPEG's all work in the same way. windows can show the thumbnails for JPEGs as they stay the same, RAW's are different for each type of camera. Microsoft need to write updates for windows to be able to read the data, when a new camera is launched it may take a few weeks for the update to to be released.

Thanks so far. None of the above idea's are working :(

This is going to drive me mad :bang:
