Need to wirelessly network something (Not a computer)

I have a satellite box, that I need to network to my router.
It has an RJ45 port (and runs custom linux software).

I could just plug it into my router via RJ45 if it were in the same room, but it's not, so I need to do it wirelessly somehow.

Any ideas? I saw the homeplug thing which would be an option, but that's a bit expensive to me, buying two homeplugs at 30 quid each.

I suppose I could buy another router and bridge the two of them wirelessly. That's the only way I can think of doing it.

Any ideas?

Wireless access point should do the trick...don't know how much they cost these days though!

Do you need a permanent connection or just to change something? If it's a one off/occasional thing I'd just go with a nice long cable for a few quid and have it trailing to the router whilst you have a fiddle and then unplug it.

If it's an always on thing then I think you're right - another router and bridge them.

Nope, tis a permanent connection required.
I think the router is the cheapest way to go.

Shame there's no such thing as an RJ45 to Wireless doofer.

Any compatible Wireless AP would do the trick. You're probably looking at around £30 though.

You could setup a wireless bridge , basically you plug the sat into a wireless router and that router then communicates to your current wireless network via wireless.

Ahh so that's what theyre called A search of 'doofer' gave me 0 results hehe

I'll look into which will be the cheapest / more suitable alternative..either the access point or the router

Just get an access point that allows you to run as a client. Try one of these/ I've done it with D-Links before, using them to turn old PCs in to wireless systems by hooking them up to the network card.

That's a wireless adaptor for a Linksys VOIP phone. Wouldn't be of any use.

I have just installed some devolo dlan homeplug adapters. They look like normal plugs but act as LAN connectors. One plug has a cable that goes into the wireless router. The other plug has a cable that goes into the satellite receiver. The installation is simple and the starter kit cost £50 for the two plugs. It works a treat.
