Need tripod advice

I've been into photography for a year now and want to move up from my cheapo tripod to a decent one. What exactly do I look for? I am willing to pay about £100 but would obviously like to pay less so I reckon carbon-fibre is out of my range. I would like one that can take a pano head at some point in the future. Also, can you get ones where the central shaft swings upside down so your camera can take shots from just above ground level? Not sure if I saw that or dreamed it.

what they both said...

i looked at manfrotto and velbon tripods, with various heads. the redsnapper tripod + ball head is an excellent choice and great value for money. you will never look back. im a big guy, so the 2.5kg doesnt bother me at all, and the carbon fibre stuff is at a real premium over regular tripods. i have a heavy camera and heavy lens on it and i trust it fully. I paid £106 for mine with an extra quick release plate, delivered within 30hrs.
 
Uni-Loc is what I have good for most things also with the legs you dont get problems with dirt or sand or water going up inside as the leg are the other way IE bottom section goes outside the uper section

Redsnapper does look good. Is it the 283 Tripod and the RSH-528 3-way panning head (£74.95 on the website) that you've got? Do you know if it wouls also take a pano head (if and when I get one)? I don't know if these things are standard or not.

I bought mine after an excellent recommendation from Hashcake. I too have the 283 tripod. I am pretty certain that tripod will take any head from the popular makers. Regardless of the head, you wont find a better tripod for the money.

Also one other point, the tripod legs extend using twist locks rather than clips. I prefer the twist locks as I think they are more durable. I feel the clip mechanism will deteriorate faster, but some people prefer the ease of use with the clips.

My dads been looking for a tripod too, Its his birthday soon so i might treat him to a red snapper one.

Then at least i can have the use of it and not get moaned out by the misses for buying more equipment.:lol:
