The 'drone' of those engines can be heard miles away, you just know the sound. A bit like a Chinook (chinstrap) in the distance (wokka wokka wokka), you know what it is before you see it. #1 is my pick. Great detail.

The sound of Merlins is something that will live with me until the day I die..

A guy behind me at Waddington was telling me that the Lancaster was flying on Friday night, doing a testing run at about 8-10000 feet, and it sounded absolutely haunting.
