There are really 2 options, if you wanting to scan film and prints then you need to really go for something like the epson as from the reviews they seem the best. If it is going to be just slides or negs you scaning then you can get a deicated film scaner. Prices range from about £80 to a few hundred. It if you got a lot and want high quality scans then it might be worth buying one in the uper price range I have a Nikon coolscan V ED which I have had a few years now, and like I just scan when I want to use one of my pics, although I have started to work through the thousands of negs and slides that I have selecting ones to keep, Doing this while replying

If you just wanting to do it for family reasons then a slightly cheaper scanner might be want you want Malpins do one for just under £80 which might be worth a look

Cheap slide/neg scanners are rubbish! Just spent £230 on one and it was absolutely rank! Just try one using negs with a pale graduated sky..... I bought the Plustek 7600i SE. Having asked about the problems on here and elsewhere I came to the conclusion that unless you are going to spend £800+ on something like the Nikon then go for an Epson V700 or V750.
