Negative/Slide Scanners ..

Hello Forum :)

I'm an unknowledgable, but enthusiastic snapper!

I bought a cheap negative scanner yesterday in order to archive my old holiday snaps and get some of my dad's slides stored digitally as well.

I got this ..

I didn't expect anything particuarly marvellous for the money - but in fact it's pretty useless (although it has good reviews!) and will have to go back.

The photos are all very grainy and the colours need a lot of tweaking ... all of which I could live with I suppose

However - when I accidentally 'captured' a shot with no negative in place - it's clear to see a really basic problem - there is a bright central light, and the corners remain dark - so all the photos have a darkish centre with a dreadful soft focus halo effect! Not the look I was going for.

Does anyone have a recommendation of something under £100 or so, which produces more acceptable results? Is it possible to hire decent scanners?

Have a look in the Film and Conventional Forum, as there are several threads about exactly this topic in there.
 
Nothing at that price I'd think - I gave up in the end as I used to have access to a Nikon Coolscan IV and anything else for me is just a bit crappy by comparison - they're still going for £1,000 on ebay...

I'm amazed anyone would find the Maplin's one acceptable ..

I checked the ebay link - with 3 days to go I'm guessing it'll head up nearer £200 .. maybe I just need to save up a few more pennies before investing ..

I'd be interested in seeing a scan, Jimmy - I could send you one of mine in return - you'll wince when you see the poor quality of it!

Thanks Jim - they look great - what a versatile machine ...

I see it's £159 directly from Canon ... so that ebay auction may not end up such a bargain!

I'll keep an eye out for another, cheaper one to come along!

Ooops - scrub that last comment - I'm getting my Canon's and Nikon's in a twist - sorry!
