My young daughters Netbook picked up a virus again, this time i just cant get rid of it.I had various programs installed for anti virus and malware etc but they wont run now or run but cant clean the netbook.

Its a Dell netbook 1011 or something like that. I want to do a fresh install to clear everything. Now it doesnt have a cd/dvd drive so i copied the windows recovery disc onto a USB memory stick, it recognises the stick but i cant get it to boot from the drive.

I have never done a fresh install as i have never needed to but i have tried ALT/F12, f12, f11, f2 etc but cant get to the bit it tells me to run a fresh install/format ( or anything like that )

Also its on XP home so do i need to put in my seriel number again????--this is a problem as its underneath the netbook and the numbers are partly unreadable.Anyone able to help before i end up putting it into a shop to be done.

Many Dells came with a restore partition. You simply clicked on the restore option, don't confuse with restore point, and it would bring the computer back to Day 1. Not sure if your model has that option, however a phone call to Dell support should confirm it one way or another. This should eliminate the viruses.

Also this facility gave you the opportunity to produce system disks, however as you don't have a Cd/DVD drive it's a mute point.

External drives are not that expensive. If you need one you should be able to pick one up for for around £35

What AV software do you have.

A friend of mine had a nasty virus a few years ago that actually attacked his Norton AV before causing problems . He had one he'll of a time getting rid of it.,I think he finally reformatted and reinstalled to get his machine working again

Ok, managed to delete old security programs before the system got blocked then ran in safe mode and installed Spybot and Microsoft Security Essentials and ran both in safe mode. This seems to have made it much better and it looks ok for the moment.

Only 1 issue now is that it wont connect to the internet, its getting a sinal so im guessing its being blocked but what am i looking for in the firewall to unblock it.
