With my burnt belly area my dad has said he will get me a netbook, as my birthday present are they any good?

It depends on what you would like to use them for.
If you would like to use them just for browsing the web and stuff like writing text, then they could be good. Some of the more expensive ones with NVIDIA ION have the power to play 1080p video. However, they can cost as much as a notebook with a CPU that has very low power consumption (higher than Atom CPUs) and better performance then typical netbook CPUs.

Nope, get an iPad. Unless you want to do work stuff.

If you want to consume media, iPad all the way

I used my laptop for photos and watching dvds and bbc iplayer, Darren has just told me that they are no good for what I want.

Have they managed to get Flash on the iPad? Lots of online content (ab)uses Flash, so web experience with them could be somewhat limiting.

No flash.
If you browse a lot of sites that use flash then it will be limiting.

It doesn't affect me, most of the flash on sites I use is advertising. Then only site it really affects for me is the BBC which has a lot of flash video

 Sorry! That was directed more @Joe - not sure if he was talking about iPlayer vid....

You could also get one of the slow, cheap, Android 1.6 powered tablet PCs from eBay for about $ 120. I almost bought one, but it seems one can't turn off the backlighting, so I'll be waiting for NotionInk's Adam or the new ASUS Eee Tablet for a tablet+ebook reader as the Adam should have the feature and the Eee Tablet should have no backlighting, which I don't mind as I'll want to use it as an e-book reader primarily.

They're good at what they were originally designed to do - be very portable with a long battery life for email, web browsing, twittering and other social networking and other low-intensity stuff. They're also not bad for showing off your pictures. They're totally useless at doing anything that requires a lot of processing power or memory - like playing top-class games or processing photos. (Yes, they can do it. But in the same way I could run a marathon - very, very slowly with a lot of pain involved).

If you want something to use all day while you're out then a netbook will fit the bill. If you're after something with even a bit of power then you're better off getting a 15" laptop.

Oh, and if you want something slower than a netbook with even more pain then get an Asus eeeeeeee Pad (although that'll be more likely to arrive for your next birthday).

Darren said pretty much the same

It's about what I think of them as well, having seen some of them in benchmarks and I have seen on about two of them myself.
Most of them will also provide a rather limited experience for showing off photos as they tend to feature rather cheap TN panels, which still have rather poor properties when viewed from an angle.

Julian,

Would a laptop cooler and new battery not be a better idea?

I have a cunning plan regarding it I have asked mrs to stack some books up on the bed tonight so I can position myself and lappy and adapter differently, because of all the Aids I have in the bedroom and where the plug socket is I have to have the adapter on my lower belly

The PSU from my macbook pro would burn you if it was sat on your belly!

I have tried another adapter and another battery and on my carers laptop it doesnt get hot, soon as I put hers into mine her adapter gets red hot, I was on a site earlier and it said what someone else suggest that its the mother board.

I don't use it for stuff with photos, but I have an Acer Aspire One Pro at work, with the bigger battery. It's quick enough for most officey tasks and the battery life is staggerying.

I really like my acer never had a mins trouble with it until lately with the battery and adapter.

I have a 12" netbook from Lenovo, the 12" screen makes a huge difference to it's useability but it's still very light and the battery life is excellent. There's a couple of different versions with a big price difference.

I bought myself the Asus Eee PC Seashell 1005HA 10" netbook last year for about £300 and it has been an amazing pc. A few of the things that sold it for me was the removable battery which has an 8.5 battery life, the great keyboard (which is important to me being a touch typer) and the 3 USB ports so I can connect a mouse, my phone and 1 x additional (i.e., cd/dvd rw, external hard drive).

This little gem is now used more than my desktop pc (which is limited to the study). With the netbook I can use it anywhere I want and even take it on my camping trips :-)

I am sure there must be newer versions of netbook now. But I am happy with what I have and even though the iPad has been launched I am going to stick with my netbook until it gives up the ghost.

Do your research and like buying a camera, go into the stores and get the feel for what is comfortable for you.

Good luck with your search.

Take care

Dawn :)

Netbooks no good for image editing you need a laptop I got a new Toshiba satellite from argos £350 windows 7  payments £150 then 2 payments of £100 with in 12 months, then no extra charge, coz were long standing customers, from some email promo they sent Julie

I am posting this from my netbook, at work. It's a MSI Wind, it's great, I got it from Argos' Ebay clearance site. It was only £149. With Win7. Bargain, got one for the misses too.

Netbooks are definately out of the windows for me. At present I have a pile of books supporting things so I dont burn again, books may set fire though lol

**** the books, bog standard table placemat is the best ;)

Well unless you intend reading the books, table placemats are a stable medium for resting the netbook/laptop, and they don't burn

 well Einstein would have probably recommended you invest in a bed-table then :D

Unless you were making reference to other phenomenon, and I don't think global warming has any play here

Something like that looks the business, the main problem in the bedroom is the plugs location and all the medical aids in the bedroom restrict where I can have wires from I am at the moment dangling the adapter over the screen on my laptop, but due to the position change I cant hold onto it. We cant have wires running across the floor as hoist equipment would get tangled up in the wires and rip them up. And the moving machine is so heavy it would crush the wires.

I have a hospital bed table at the side of the bed but I cant type when laptop is on it due to where that stays. I use that when Im watching dvd or bbcIplayer. I think its gonna be a new mother board to resolve this in all honesty. And thats only if economically viable.

Have you had a chat to your HCP about the best option for you? They do normally have a lot of advice, if not they may be able to consult the IT Dept for the best option for you. I think Risk Assessment is on the cards here!

I work in the NHS and know that there are staff out there who could assess and advise you accordingly.

Hope you find comfort soon.

D :)
