Netgear wireless router

Had a netgear wireless router for some years now that we got with our virgin internet. It's been fine for quite a long time but recently it's started to play up. In the mornings and late evenings it dosen't want to connect via wireless, the signal is there but it's so slow it won't even load google.

I have to reset it by switching it off at the mains, leaving it for 10 minutes and turning it back on, then it works fine. Bit of a pain and no reason why it should do it since the connection is probably fine? Could be time to upgrade

Anyone got any ideas?

It could be a conflict with other routers in the area. Check and see what channel it is set to and also what channel any other network you can see is on. Software is available to help with this. If you are on a common channel change to another, leaving a reasonable gap.

For example if you are on 6 then move to 1 or 11.

I had a similar issue with my one and updating it to the latest firmware helped.

Make sure you back up your router settings before you upgrade the firmware.

Mine started doing this. The wireless side of things was basically kaput. Tried different channels but if it is a MIMO one then to get the max 108 M bandwidth you are restricted in the channels you can use, usually only 6. Was just as duff on every channel. Ended up using the supplied Dlink router from Virgin instead for wireless but used the netgear for wired as it works fine that way.

Worth trying a firmware update and switching channels just in case. If you have a wireless scanning tool it is worth seeing what channels nearby routers are on so you can pick a freeish one.

Thanks for the replies. I've changed the channel to 11, see what happens.

Although I don't think that'll be it somehow, I've done a bit more research and the model of the router is a DG834GSP v3, netgear only list the DG834G v3 so I'm guessing the SP bit is because it was supplied by virgin. Just like on some cameras, that are made specifically for someone like argos, so they have a slightly different model number.

I think the firmware could do with an upgrade but it looks like it could be locked by virgin, this is only what I've read but I haven't tried it yet. Mainly because I'm not sure if the model I have applies to the same one netgear list. Trying to phone virgin support is going to be a painful and long process I only know too well

I had constant dropped lines and wireless issues with my old netgear (DSL), a firmware update improved these dramatically.

However virgin do lock their gear IIRC, and the netgear is very dated now compared to what is available for under £50.

Cable? You can pick up a draft N wireless, DD-WRT capable, Gigabit wired router for ~50, or spend even less if you don't require gigabit wired & dd-wrt.

See if they will send you a more modern router, as said it's quite dated now.

Phoned them this afternoon and they try to fob you off with the usual story of it being because it's wireless and not a wired connection. They wanted me to leave my laptop connected for 24 hrs to see if it drops out. I said no I'm sure it's because the router is out dated, the connection speed after it's reset is fine. So they are sending out their latest netgear N router for free, result.

Thanks to everyone who replied

Always nice, a happy ending.

Now all I need to do is move to a virgin 100mb area, currently on 2.5Mb DSL for 25 a month + line rental with only 1 ISP in the area running a monopoly :(.
