Network Computers 'Lost' Again

Until recently I had a 'home/office' network linking my Win 7 laptop with two desktops, (both running Windows XP), a NAS with 2 x 500GB drives, another NAS with 2 x 1TB drives and a DVR (digital video recorder for CCTV).
The computers all run through a wired router/modem with an additional 4-port unit attached and all computers access the Internet via the router/modem.

Then came a (Genuine) Microsoft Virus/Malware/Registry scan and since running it I can no longer connect to or 'ping' my two desktops. I can still view the DVR, access the router Admin and both NAS Admins - and both the laptop and the two desktops can access the Internet through the router.
I cannot view or 'ping' the desktops but the desktops continue to access the Internet without issues and can view, 'ping' and work with each other, the DVR and the NAS but not the Win 7 laptop.
I'm now stumped at what to try next to reconnect the two desktops with the laptop - anyone any ideas?

TIA

[Edit - I did a restore to before the scan but to no effect]

Turn the firewall off(on all machines), then see if you can ping.

If you use classic view control panel
Control Panel -> Windows Firewall -> Turn windows firewall off (top left corner)

If not
Control Panel -> Security -> Windows Firewall -> Turn Windows firewall on or off

Thanks, yep firewall off and connection made, worked my way around the network settings for the firewalls and now connection is back - weird how all that got messed from the scan.

This is now really bugging me - keeps coming and going!
I switch the firewall off on all machines and the network comes back.
Switch the firewalls back on and it stays for a while then disappears again.

I'm using Comodo Internet Security Premium and I have the Network IP Range set under the 'Network Zones' tab on all computers but something seems to be clicking in to wipe it out after a few minutes.

I'm pulling my hair out, it has been fine for months and now just playing up - any suggestions other than leaving the firewall off?

Wee while since I used Comodo but is there not a way of selecting how strict the security settings are?

If not, then uninstall Comodo from all your computers.

With all computers running, reinstall Comodo one at a time, making sure each time that your computers are reachable.

so you run comodo and windows firewall? so when you say youre turning the firewall off, which one are you doing?

to be honest theres not much point running more than windows firewall combined with your router. anything else is just added complication and drain on resource.

^ what neil said. Provided you don't start opening ports on your router I wouldn't bother with software firewalls. Run an anti virus program and leave it at that.

Which crystal ball showed you that the OP was using Windows firewall and Comodo?????????????????????????????

It certainly wasn't his posts!

Same crystal ball question to you?

When you say "I can no longer connect to or 'ping' my two desktops" are you pinging them by name or by IP address? You need to try both ways first to rule out a name resolution issue. Also, can the 2 XP machines talk to each other? Without this info, my "crystal ball" would tell me that there may be an issue with NetBIOS name resolution as the affected machines are Windows based and the VCR, NAS and router are not. Post back what you find :)

The OP has said he's using Comodo, and responded that disabling the windows firewall initially solved the problem.
Maybe you should read the thread.

Not that it matters, I just wouldn't bother with any software firewall.

there is a question mark on the end of my post you know..

thats what it sounded like and im trying to clarify. certainly unless the OP has disabled windows firewall (unless comodo does that for you) it will still be running.

If I remember correctly, Comodo switches off the Windows firewall.

One ? is never enough

Oh I did read the thread carefully.

Perhaps you would like to highlight where the OP mentioned Windows firewall?

Then you can join me at Specsavers tomorrow (on account of me not seeing Neil's question mark)
