Hi all, having a problem with wifes laptop, sony vaio...keeps losing IP address,
It works for a day or a week, then I get pop up, saying that it hasn't got a IP address? so i reboot router, then all's well again, it stays connected to router at all times,I wouldn't bother, but shes giving me ear-ache over it :lol:..
just had this laptop back from repair shop,so I'm probably missing a setting some
where? other laptops work ok ..:thumbs:mark.

okay..

first think to have a look at to rule out, on your router if you log in to the interface and look for the DHCP settings.

whats the range, i.e. start and end values? and how many devices access the router (inc mobiles that use the wireless etc).

also does it show the address leases in use? if so how many are listed?

if that all checks out then we can move onto the laptop config.

I've seen similar behaviour cased by wireless interference. I had to set the router to a different wireless channel at the time. Done by going into the router config.

Usually that means typing the routers IP address into your browser and logging in to the web interface. Google your router model for the address and default login/password. it will be something like http://192.168.1.1/ as the address and admin as the user and possibly password too.
 
assuming you mean a dgn1000..

youve got the LAN Setup page. whats the start and end ip addresses? how many devices do you have that connect to the router in total?

the attached devices page will show you what is connected at the present time.
 
1. Login to Vista with an account with administrator privileges.
2. Click Start and type cmd -> press enter
3. Type ipconfig /release -> press enter
4. Type ipconfig /renew -> press enter
5. Restart the Laptop and see how it goes...

If you still find the issues unresolved, then carry out step 1 & 2 as above but with the following step

3. netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
4. Restart the Laptop

thanks.... I tried loads of times to resolve this,... reset the router to factory settings in the end, all's going well , now :thinking:...mark.
 
If you reset the router it will have removed wireless security so you will need to redo that. Still think it could be wireless interference causing the drop outs and the reset may have changed the channel.
 
You would but here it only affected my wife's laptop used in the front room. Maybe 'wife' is the common factor :)

Edit.. oh and the other thing was bringing the laptop close to the router solved the problem - until it was moved away again so signal strength/clarity was the problem.
