Network PC vista with laptop XP

Yes
I've just bought a laptop (arrives tomorrow :) ) with XP Pro SP3 as the OS and I currently have a PC at home with Vista Home Premium.

Remembering I'm pretty illiterate when it comes to computers, am I able to network these two via my broadband router (wired) or via some direct wired link, or are they incompatible because I'm using two different operating systems?

I have the Vista install disc so I could upgrade the laptop to Vista. Presumably I just slip in the disc and follow the instructions for 'Upgrade'? Would I then be able to netwrok the PC and laptop via the router?

Is upgrading the laptop to Vista a sensible thing to do anyway?

Thanks for any advice. Sorry I'm such a muppet when it comes to IT

They should talk to each other and use the internet with no problem as they are.

You may need to make a folder on the XP machine shared so it can been seen by the Vista machine. Vista seems to have a folder called public shared by default.

That's great, thanks.

You will need to install this

on the xp machine for it to show up correctly on the vista network map.

Also see here for advice

Some people find it helps if you create the same user account (with a password) that is on the xp machine on the vista one ( you don't have to use it).

Your advice is much appreciated, thanks. I guess I'm going to learn some IT by default going through this process.
