New 14-42mm lens for Panasonic GX7

Hi,

I'm intrigued to know what the difference is between the new 14-42mm lens found on the Panasonic GX7 and the older 14-42 kit lens found on the likes of the G6. If anyone has any info on this I'd appreciate it if you could share your knowledge.

The main differences are cosmetic - it's smaller, lighter and the all black (or silver) finish is a better match to the finish on the GX7.
Some tests I've read suggest the optical quality is better.
If you follow the link to my Flickr page in my signature most of the more recent stuff was taken with this lens.
 
Thank you. Have you had previous experience with the old lens as well? If so, in 'real world' terms, have you noticed any differences in image quality?
 
I had the old 14-42 on the GX1 I had briefly before getting the GX7. I didn't really use it enough to form much of an opinion on it, and never bothered doing any sort of comparison between the two.
I did read somewhere that the old 14-45mm kit lens was better than the 14-42 that replaced it, and the new style 14-42 is on a par with the 14-45mm, if that makes any sense.
 
Yes that does make sense and thank you very much for your input. It is very much appreciated. I have recently acquired a Panasonic GX7 (body only) through work, but don't have any micro 4/3 lenses. I'm waiting on a 25mm f1.4 but have not been given a timescale for its arrival (annoyingly it might be a few days or a few months. They just cannot say). So, I'm thinking of picking up something of good value to use in the meantime...

Sorry for the misunderstanding, I'm not purchasing the lens. I've won it through an incentive at work and it is being ordered direct from Panasonic and Panasonic are unable to say when I might receive it.

If you like the focal lengths the tiny 14mm Panasonic lens can be picked up brand new on ebay for £120 or so (new, split from kit) or the 45mm Olympus 1.8 is around £200 new or £150/£160 used - both excellent value. Otherwise the original 14-45 can be found for around £120 used, although it's quite big compared to some of the newer kit lenses. The Olympus 40-150 telephoto is good value too and very lightweight - best deal is the 'Pen Zoom Kit' (lens + OlympusPen bag) which at £115 is cheaper than buying the lens on it's own!

No worries - I think the 14 + 25 (or 20) + 45 makes a nice set of primes, plus the 40-150 for longer stuff (GX7 has IBIS so you will have stabilisation with an Olympus lens, unlike the other Panasonic bodies). Also, I forgot about the Sigma f2.8 lenses which are a great bargain - the Sigma 19mm, 30mm and 60mm - the first two might be a bit too similar to your 25mm focal length though? All 3 get good reviews and they can be found new for as little as £130 for the 60mm (SRS on ebay) or even less for the older versions of the 19mm and 30mm. My answer to almost everything... Buy a cheap legacy prime and a cheap adapter off ebay.

Adapter... circa £10.
50mm f1.7/1.8... under £20,
or a 28mm f2.8 for under £30.

So for under £40 you can have an adapter and either a 50mm f1.8 or 28mm f2.8 (or treat yourself by going mad and buying both!) and you can use it and be happy until your 25mm AF lens turns up.
 
I bought an adapter for £10 for my old Pentax lenses. Then, I fitted my 50mm f2 lens to it and it works ok, although a little loose, but now I can't seem to take the adapter off. I was hoping to put my 28mm f2.8 on it too...
