Well I rented the new 24-70 markII for the weekend. I will be going full frame soon and need to figure out what walk around lens I will get to replace my 17-55. I have it narrowed down to the 24-70 or the 16-35. I will rent that one in the next week or so. I like the idea of wider but I don't know how I will feel about loosing the reach. I do have a 70-200 markII for the long end but at this point I'm a bit stuck on my decision.

16-35 on a full frame would be very wide for a walk around. 24-70 or 24-105 would be a more usual choice. Interesting idea though. Here are some examples with the 16-35

When renting remember any lens will appear wider on a full frame than on your T3i.

Yes I am trying to figure out the focal length and I think I have a good idea of what I'm dealing with as far as crop vs full frame. I haven't looked at my shots I took today on a computer but from what I have seen the new 24-70 is a bad boy. Kinda wish it wasn't so I didn't have to spend so darn much for it.

I use a 16 35L and. A 70 200 on. A 5d3 and it works well. I don't miss he focal length between 36-69 at the moment but will most likely upgrade m nifty fifty to a L 50mm in the future.

The 16 35 is a cracking lens and love the ultra wide perspective of it.

Coming from a 60D (8 years with crops) to a 5DMKIII last year i too felt thrown by the change in focal lengths.
I spent almost 5 years with a 17-55IS f/2.8 as my main walkabout lens. For me the 24-70 range is as close as i can get to what im used to.
I had a 15-85IS for a year, just before getting my 5DMKIII. 15mm on a crop was the widest ive ever gone, and hardly used it, so 24mm on FF is fine for me but i do miss having a longer reach. most of my shooting is done at the longer end of my 24-70, i do hit 70mm a large % of the time.
I'd say the 24-105L would be the ideal lens but ive never really liked that lens. Its just boring to me. I also like to do a lot of hand held night photography, and although i have primes would prefer to use a zoom, so i wanted something at least f/2.8.
Not much choice really. I had two copies of the Tamron 24-70 f/2.8 VC but both had issues. Shame as that lens seemed perfect on paper. I can shoot fairly slow with the 24-70 but nothing like 1/4 sec i could with a stabilised lens.

The 24-105 L is smaller and lighter so maybe better for a walk around although it's not majorly different but it's a good lens

There is also the 24-70 f4 which is even smaller and lighter again , no idea if these are available yet?

From experience I used the 24-105 on my 5d for walking about and never felt limited by the f4 and the extra length came in handy quite often

ATM I have a d600 and use the 24-120 f4 and for me it's ideal although at times I wish I could go a little wider but for a walkabout it's all about making compromises to get what best fits for yourself
