new 350d help please

hi everyone, just got a 350d and went out with it yesterday to try it out, set it up on tripod near a bird feeding station with 70x300 lens + 2x converter, looked perfect for the woodpecker there set a fast shutter speed to get a sharp picture with it moving but the picture was to dark to see anything but when i slowed shutter down it was a bit blurred due to movement of the bird. any help about settings please.

You have just found out why people spend £1000s on huge lenses for bird pictures

You can try increasing the ISO as that may help in good light with the lens combination you are trying. In poor light you are going to have a problem.
