New 550D - Wrong box!

Just realised my new Canon 550D with 18-55 kit lens, has come in a 550D with 18-135 kit lens box. I have checked the bar code numbers on the side of the box, the body matches, but obviously the code for the lens is different, seeing it is a 18-55 and not the 18-135.
I noticed the seal had been broken, it looks like they have put a 18-55 lens from another Canon DSLR lens kit. Should I be concerned about this? As Canon must know what lens serial number came with which body.

Should I contact RGB Photo, or should every thing be ok regarding warranties etc.

yep looks like they have taken the 18-135 out and swapped it for the cheaper 18-55mm. I personally would not be too happy with this as i would have expected the box to match the contents. Rgb do tend to have this tendency for doing this . I was going to buy a 16-85mm from them but on enquiring they did say it was a white box ie taken from a kit. usually it's ok as it is a new lens but may be a problem when it comes to selling. Your call
 
Wouldn't worry too much, the receipt is what matters and if anything goes wrong with the camera its the retailer who is responsible. If sent direct to Canon all they want is a UK invoice which you no doubt have

Lots of cameras get sold on here in a box without the lens they came with, sold one myself like that and bought one too, not many people keep the kit lens that long
 
As long as the equipment is OK and is what you wanted then the box really doesn't matter. Although I'm sure someone will disagree!
 
I would kick up a fuss and try get a partial refund or the correct box. They are just down the road from me and have used their shop a few time and they are sound people
 
Which did you order ?

If you order the 18-55 I'd not worry too much, but if you paid for the 18-135, then I'd want what I paid for.

I would still have wanted an un-opened box, so would ask for either a replacement or a cash discount.
 
I personally wouldn't be too fussed, if you paid for a 550D with the 18-55 lens, got a 550D with the 18-55 lens, and the receipt says you 550D with 18-55 lens then I wouldn't really be bothered what the box says.

The only thing I'd want to check is that the camera hasn't been used as a display model, try finding a program that will tell you how many actuations the camera has done. Don't be surprised if there are a few on there, but every now and again you hear of one which has done a few thousand then put back in the box!

It does say one our wed site that some kits may be made from different kits.
The camera Body and lens are new all that we do at our end is take out the 18-55IS and the from a canon 60D kit take the 18-135 and add that to the 550D Box.
This does not effect your warrenty in any way as if one of them was to go faulty they would only want to see that one item and the receipt.

We are very sorry you did not know about us making the kit up.

I think that annoying though it is we just have to put up with things like this otherwise the shops couldn't stock everything to keep us happy as some people want a body only and others want kits with this or that lens... this is the result... boxes don't always match.

The alternative is getting the correct box but waiting a few days or weeks for it to be ordered and arrive in stock.
 
Here's a coincidence. RGB Photo just happen to be the cheapest retailer for the Canon 550D kit. Did that factor into your buying decision?

I'll venture a guess that the way they can afford to undercut the far bigger retailers is by playing clever tricks with their inventory; buying lots of kits that Canon want to puch at them cheaply, then breaking them up and reconfiguring them to match what the customers actually want.

If they didn't do that then they wouldn't be so cheap.

And your complaint is....? That they shouldn't sell things so cheaply?
 
John Lewis had in stock with free delivery for the same price, someone suggested RGB so that was the first one I tried.

I just expected it to be untampered with, not with a lens from who knows where.

I can't quite tell if you find this response acceptable or not from your reply, what do you think about it? If it's stated on their site, then there's really nothing you can do (not that I think there's anything that needs doing, personally, but I know some people feel differently).

My 5D (body only) came in a 5D + 24-105 kit box. After the initial disappointment of realising kerso hadn't accidentally sent me an £800 lens for free (:D), it sank in that moving the kits around and selling them differently was one of the reasons that I could afford it.

So i put the box away in a cupboard, where I'm sure yours will go soon, and got stuck in to playing with my new toy.

Realistically the 550D will last you much longer than the kit lens will anyway, give it a few months and you'll probably have sold it and bought a new lens anyway :D

Edit: Your replied while I was still writing, I can tell what you make of it now! But they say the 18-55 comes from a 60D kit? So it's still new and untampered with surely?

Do the lens and body function correctly and is there any damage to either product?

If not I wouldnt worry - you've paid for the kit not the box! Its not uncommon practice to mix its of kit around and re box it accordingly.

Then you need to make up for lost time, so get outside and take photos of everything and anything you see! You'll have wondered what all the fuss about the box was for in no time :thumbs: :D
 
I would, but its decided to rain after having snow for over a week!

Just got Elements 9 from PC World, so will install that and have a play!

It was me that gave you the link to Camera Price Buster who were listing RGB as the cheapest on that day.

Seriously Dougie if you got what you paid for and it's all brand new put this little niggle in the niggle box and stick it on the shelf.

You have a great bit of kit there, don't let the fact it's a mix and match put you off, it's all new and warrentied.

Take some pictures throught the window of the rain if you have to, you'll soon forget this thread :D
 
I live just outside Middlesbrough so I've bought lots from RGB. They are good and helpful guys and photography fans and I'd recommend them.
 
i would not have been happy if the body had been used for display or demo purposes or been returned for any reason, but seeing as all they have done is a lens switch then i would be satisfied with that
 
Just had a phone call from RGB Photo and after a bit of discussion, they have given me a extra 12 months warranty on top of Canon's warranty.

Cannot say fairer than that!
 
suppose what they do makes sense from a profit point of view. shame im so picky id want the proper box with the proper kit!
 
Both of my 7ds have come in the wrong box (not from rgb mind) - 1st one was body only in a 18-135 kit box and my current one was body in an 18-135 kit box with the 24-105L in a white box from a 5d2 kit.

They do it all the time to make the prices more competitive and as already said I wouldn't worry about it one jot. :thumbs:

Step away from the box and use the camera :lol:
