New (and first) DSLR

Hi All,

Over the last couple of years I have experimented with different cameras and have taken some really good shots with my Bridge camera but now I'm looking at getting a DSLR. I've got a budget of about £600 and would like some advise of which camera to get and also some advise with regards to lenses.

The standard reply is go to a shop, have a play and fiddle with them.

You may find one camera is more comfortable to use than another.

I would say stick to Canon/Nikon as they have the widest lens choice and there is more second hand stuff around. Not to say Sony/Pentax etc are bad cameras - far from it.

Which lens depends on what you want to shoot, I had a quick look at your flickr and it seems to be a bit of everything, so go with the kit lens for the moment.
 
Why do you want a DSLR? Answer that question, you might be better served by some of the great mirrorless cameras or you might have needs/wants that a low end DSLR might not need.

Might be worth thinking about what you want to shoot first so we can advice on a camera+lens combo.
 
There's no substitute for hands on as Craft says. If you're used to a bridge camera then a smaller DSLR or mirrorless body may suit you better.
 
I had bridge cameras up until last christmas when I got a canon D550. I'd trawled the net for info and comparisons of loads of different cameras and I decided on the 550D before I'd even held one. When I actually got it I was even more impressed than I had hoped for.
It's a great camera for the price and with your budget you could go for a twin lens kit with an 18-55 IS and a 55-250 IS lens, which are both very good lenses. Most importantly though, go for a body that you are comfortable with size wise and weight wise. Dont forget, if you put a big heavy lens like the canon 100-400 L or a sigma 50-500mm you're going to be carrying the same as 2-3 bags of sugar all the time.

Can't beat just picking them up and seeing what you like. Every brand will take a decent photo.

There's a good choice of second hand lenses for every brand and sony/pentax lenses will have fewer people chasing after them anyway :)
 
Ive just bought the a580 did have the a390 both exellent cameras and under you budget
