We are expecting in Feb, also my wifes b'day in Jan.
I was thinking of getting her a compact camera or maybe a video camera which can take stills?

Any reccomendations, preferably Hd and around £200

I dont know why, but im edging towards the compact video camera. All proper baby pics will be with my SLR. I just thought as a gift it would be a nice way of capturing babylife

Firstly, congratulations.
Secondly, if you've already got an SLR, i would veer more towards the video camera, pictures are one thing but videos are different, more...moving. :)
Though i don't know much about them so can't give you any advice in that area.

I'd probably go with the video camera. Having spent the past 4 months photographing our new baby, I've found that my compact is only any use when she's asleep (and not moving), and in good light. Hence, I tend to use my SLR for the majority of the pictures as it's AF is quicker (the older they get, the more they move!) and it copes with lower light better.

My congratulations too.

I'd vote for video as well since these are precious and special moments you'd want to treasure. You may not use the video forever but the movies you'll make with it, you'll keep for life.

My 2c

All my best
