hi people Ive been away from here for awhile as i couldn't find the time id like for photography but thats another story : )
Ive now got renewed interest and i am interested in a new camera body namely the 5d mk 3 or the 7d mk 2 i am a keen amateur mainly into birds animals with the odd landscape when something catches my eye.
Ive got a 7d which i love and a 50d which i use to save changing lens ( but has now got a fault ) hence the new body
my questions are !!!
1, will the grip off my 50d fit the 5d mk3 or 7d mk2 ? its a bg-e2n
2, will the cards i have be suitable for either body ? they are sandisk extreme 60mb/s udma or will i require newer faster cards
3, and will my 1.4x extender work on a/f with either new body
thanks in-advance
p.s which camera body would you prefer and why please

1 - No it won't. The 5D3 uses a BG-E11 grip and the 7D2 uses BG-E16

2 - They'll work but there may be better. Not sure without looking it up.

3 - An EF fitting extender will fit the cameras. Whether it will retain AF is more to do with what lens you're using.

Lenses focus 'wide open' and introducing a TC means you 'loose' 1 stop for a 1.4 teleconverter and 2 stops for a 2X teleconverter.

Generally speaking AF is retained up to f5.6, so you can use a 2XTC on f2.8 lens (becoming f5.6) and a 1.4TC on an f4 (becoming f5.6)

Some cameras retain AF up to f8 meaning you can still use a 2XTC on an f4 lens.

4 - Horses for courses and it'll depend on everybody's own current set up and shooting needs. Me it would be the 5D3 but only because of what i already have.

In that case (working at 400mm) your putting a 1.4 teleconverter on a f5.6 lens loosing 1 stop of light so it becomes a 400mm f8 lens.

Many cameras will only retain AF up to f5.6 so once you make it f8 the AF will be lost.

My 1D3 and 1D4 retain AF at f8 using a 100-400 L

You may want to check which of the 5D3 or 7D2 still retain AF at f8. I think they do with the firmware update although I think there are differences depending on whether you're using a mark II or mark III teleconverter.

PS

When I say 'retain' AF at f8 I'm talking about the centre AF point.

The 7D2 will focus (centre point) at f/8; I don't know about the 5D3. As to which is best, it really depends what you want it for. I do lots of wildlife and dog (action) photography, so the 7D2 is perfect for me and I just love it.

You say you photograph birds and animals, in which case you get extra reach with the 7D2's crop factor, a top of the line AF system, 10fps and a good sized buffer, and there is no reason why you can't take the odd landscape with it, either.

Ok you have a 7D and a 50D with a fault, first of all whats the fault, have you thought about send the 50D away to be serviced/fixed. If you can fix the 50D, you have 2 capable bodies, why do you want a new body when either or both bodies suit your needs now.

What lenses do you have already apart from the 100-400mm

My advice would be get you 50D to a repairer to get a quote on repair costs.

thanks for you input the fault on the 50d is the main dial for the camera when you turn it nothing happens im not sure it is repairable so the main reason for a new body is to replace the 50d .
i use to keep the 100/400 on the 7d and swap between the 24/105 and 10/22 on the 50d as for my lens i have a 100/400L - 24/105L - 10/22 - 1.4x extender and nifty fifty thanks again

The 7D Mk II and the 5D Mk III can both autofocus with an f/8 lens. So they can both AF with a 100-400mm and a 1.4x Extender.
