New Camera Advice

Im looking for a new camera, ive been looking at the Nikon D3100 so i thought id nip into jessops today so i could have a close up look at it and ask for a bit of advice.

The salesman in there then started showing me the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2

Id just like a bit of advice and peoples oppinions as to which is the better camera.

I think they're completely different things Dean. The Nikon is a DSLR and the GF is a sort of largish pocket camera. The DSLR will possibly shade the GF on image quality but the GF will be easier to carry.

I think that you should have a think about what your own requirements are and then go back to the shop at bit more armed.

Well id got into my head that id like a DSLR, hence looking at the D3100. I forgot to say that at the minute im using a Fuji s200hd Bridge. Id like to learn how to use all the manual settings and get the most from the camera. Size doesnt really bother me too much.
 
If size isn't an issue a DSLR or an interchangeable lens camera might give you more chance to get involved and more fun. The GF is an interchangeable lens camera and it is something that might be worth looking at.

I don't think that it's possible to buy a bad camera these days but a bit of internet Googling might be a good idea so that you can find out what's available or maybe you could buy a photography mag and wade through it as there's be lots of adverts that could give you some prompts.

Many people start out with a camera body and a kit lens, something like a 18-50mm f3.5-5.6 and maybe a 50-250mm as a second lens. If money isn't an issue you could dive straight in with something better like a body and a 17-50mm f2.8 and as a second lens you could go for a wide like a 10-20mm or a zoom like a 70-200 or 70-300mm or a specialist lens like a 50mm f1.4 or 90mm f2.8 macro.
 
We can probably help more \ give some alternative suggestions if you mention budget and what you would principally like to photography (family and portraits \ landscapes \ wildlife \ sports \ macro etc).

Whilst I now see the many other benefits of a DSLR, one of the main reasons I got one was the faster AF and lack of shutter lag I always got from compacts.
 
Budget at the minute id say around £450 maybe stretch it a little.

Id be mainly using it for family shots and landscapes etc on hol.
