New Camera Advice

I'm after a bit advice on some new kit. The camera I'm looking at is a Canon 60D. I do a lot of fishing and magazine work so I need it for outdoor portrates, scenic shots and macro (the video will come in usefull too). So my question is, is this the best camera to go for?

Also I have 2 old lenses with my old 10D, both Canon Ultrasonics, 28-80mm and 55-200mm, will I get good quality shots using these or do I need something a bit more up todate to get the best from the 60D?

I need a flashgun too, any suggestions?

Keep the lenses and go for the 60D.

As far as a flashgun goes. If you have serious brand loyalty. Go for the 480EX II Canon one. If not, Jessops have an absolutely fantastic speedlight. It's their branded Canon fit one.

Theres an 85mm Canon Lens that i've played with only a couple of times in a LCE store. It's very decent, very sharp and works well with a ring flash.

For your scenics, Canon 17-85mm or the Canon 10-22mm. Either is good and with the 17-85 its also an awesome walkaround lens. The 10-22 is expensive and also VERY wide angle, but it is fantastic for landscapes, especially when teamed with ND filters.

Unlike Alex I wouldn't recommend either the Canon 17-85mm or 10-22mm. I've owned both and I think that you could do better if going for lenses in those respective zoom ranges.

In your place I think I'd be asking myself what's limiting me or needs improvement with my current kit? A new camera will give you video but for the type of shots you want will a new camera get you better quality or shots that you otherwise wouldn't have got? I've had a 10D and I thought that it was a good camera if a little sluggish in use, but other than that, ok. Your lenses are a bit ho-hum though but again, are you not getting the results you're looking for?
 
There's a more expensive option of the 24-105mm L lens, but for doing scenic shots, as in landscapes. I would chose the 10-22, as it's versatile for wide angles. I recommended the 85mm as it's macro, and it's very decent too.

I don't think his glass is that 'ho-hum' either. It's very respectable kit and if he knows what he is doing he will produce very nice photos.
 
OK, ho-hum IMVHO :D but I certainly wouldn't choose those lenses today :D

And if the lenses are capable and up to the task that brings us back to my central point, what's wrong with the current kit?

Although wanting video is a very valid reason to buy a new camera.
 
Hi Gents, thanks for your advice. Basically my situation is I have 2 cameras that I carry with me a 10D with the afore mentioned Lens and a Canon Poweshot SX20 (bridging camera). The touble with the 10D is that screen is so small that I'm not sure about the quality of the shots until I get home. The good thing about SX20 is it has the flip round screen for framing self takes and the film mode, and it is very usable.
There are 2 ways I appear in the Magazines, either I write about past experences when I have caught fish and use my own pictures. Or the magazine editor comes out and does a feature with me. I can't come close to the editors pictures (they all use 40Ds) so I wanted to sell the 2 cameras and get the one to cover all bases and to hopefully get up to scratch with the editors quality.

The Jessops flashgun looks the one, thank Alex :-)
 
Not a problem! Ill be picking one up myself instead of borrowing my friends all the time!
 
If you want a wide angle, the Canon 10-22 is the best option - end of story.
 
It wont fit a 10D so if going for that lens a new body would be required.

Having owned one I would argue that you could do better than the 10-22mm but as I've already been ever so slightly negative about two Canon lenses already in this thread I'll restrict myself to saying that other wide angle lenses are available :D and some will fit the 10D too.
 
But it will fit the 60d! :)
 
Indeed, and the 60D has that articulating screen which might come in useful, especially for video.

Thanks for the advice, I had a look at the 5D but I do like the flip round screen on the 60D and the Video means I can sell my SX20.

I can't access that link, I think I need a few more posts.

I have bought the Jessops 360 flashgun and it seems like a really good bit of kit for the price.

I think I will get a 18-55mm lens with the 60D and sell the 28-80mm with the 10D.

Any advice on where to get a 60D at a good price?:)
