Hi all,

I asked a simular question a while back but things have changed slighly since then (requirements and budget).

I intend getting a 5D classic in the near future for landscape and portraite work but the amount of action / sports photography that I am now doing (for both pleasure and profit) is making me wonder in regards to my body of choice for this type of photography.

After doing a rally event over the weekend I have been bitten and really fancy doing more of this type of thing in the future (for pleasure at the moment), I will also be doing show jumping and other such photography aswell.

What would you recommend now that my situation and requirements have changed?

Option 1 - 1D mk III
Option 2 - 7D
Option 3 - Other

I am open to any options really, I will also be purchasing something along the lines of a canon 70-200 f/2.8 or f/4 in the near future aswell. Are there any other options in regard to this (sigma etc...).

Thanks again in advance

Mark

I would probably go for the 1D3 in your situation.

It is the camera that was really made for the action work - but the sensor is still bigger/less dense than the 7D meaning landscape and portrait will also be handled well

Go with the 1D3 and pair it with the 70-200 2.8.
You'll need a fast lens for indoor Show Jumping, the arenas are always poorly lit. Don't know anything about Siggy's I'm afraid.
Personally I don't use the VR/IS function for my Equine stuff, hope that helps.

thanks for quick replies,
I maybe should have worded it slightly different, i still intend to get the 5D for landscapes etc and as as second body but am not sure what use as my primary body for action etc.

will the 1D get close enough for motorsport etc along with a 70-200? would i be better with the 7D or a longer lens if required?

Thanks again in advance

Depends on the type of motorsport and venue...

Sorry about the last reply, I was at work and replying on my phone.

I was originally thinking more to do with the difference in crop factor, Im just wondering if I would miss the extra reach or not.

The 1D's Tank like build quality would also come in handy for those shots of rough seas (I live right on the coast) I have always wanted to get close but the spray has always put me off. How does the 1D compare in regards keeping mud, salt and other crap out compared to the 7D? is Photographing muddy off road rallies etc going to be that bad for the 7D's Heath compared to the 1D?

Is the AF Tracking on the MkIII sorted now, Ive read of the AF issues and just wondering if the MKIII will be able to cope with high speed motorsport?

thanks again in advance

In all honesty I would leave the 5D for now and grab a 7D for the motorsport etc, its earning you money then that you could put toward a 5Dmk2.
lens wise I think the Canon 70-200 F2.8 is a sound investment, you could add a 1.4x extender as well.

Re the spray have you though of trying a camera coat? a water proof one? as long as the spray cant get under it, it should do the job.
