looking to get a new camera soon and have narrowed my choices down to 2 the 40 and 50 d.

is the 50d worth spending that bit extra over the 40d it will be used for all kinds of photography and also is there any issues with either of the cameras to look out for when buying

The 50D increased the pixel count to 15 million pixels from the 40Ds 10 million pixels, an increase of 50% and the biggest ever increase at the time.

This has a huge advantage in extra reach of lenses for some forms of photography in that even with quite heavy cropping, a good pixel count and therefore good image quality is still retained. Wildlife and bird photographers benefited particularly.

Micro lens adjustment was also introduced with the 50D which enables users to make their own adjustment for any slight focusing errors with lenses. A Quick Control Screen was introduced also - a very handy feature which enables pretty well all shooting parameters on a single screen where they can be quickly adjusted.

I've owned both cameras and you wont really go wrong with either. If you don't need the increased pixel count of the 50D you'd probably be just as well served by the 40D. I'd personally opt for a used 50D for my bird photography and used prices are pretty attractive these days.
 
I never had any isssues at all with the 40D btw, and I've had none with the 50D which still gets pretty regular use.
 
I have the 50D and love it, cannot comment on the 40D but I do allsorts of photgraphy and it seems to handle every situation well

Never had a 40D but have read plenty about them, a quality body which is very popular with those that have had it.

For me I would personally spend the extra for the improved resolution screen alone and the ability to micro adjust your lenses.

Had my 50D for about a 1 1/2 years and love it :)
 
I have a 40D and its fine.The price diff ( used obviously) between the 2 is about £120.If I was buying now I think I would get the 50D,if only for the MA and the extra pixels.
Having said that I have just bought a used 5Dc and it blows the 40D away.
