New Camera Help with decision (canon)!

Hi Guys

So its finally time to upgrade! I currently have a Canon 5d which is/has done me proud. I now have a £1200 budget to upgrade (I will be holding onto my 5d also).

I am looking at the Canon 5d MkII or Canon 6d. Can you please help with my decision. I have read many "vs" scenarios and I am getting confused and keep changing my mind! Although not a huge budget - its a big deal for me.

I shoot portraiture, lifestyle, newborns and weddings.

I am open to suggestions - so all comments will be much appreciated.

I had a 5D mkII and upgraded to a 6D. Both very good cameras but the 6D is the winner for me. Various little reasons but the main factor is the much better low light performance of the 6D. I would have thought this might be a major factor for you with portraiture and possibly weddings.

You will notice the 6D is a much lighter camera as well. Possibly useful if you are carrying it around for long periods. However there is a possible downside here. With some heavy lenses I have found that the 6D and lens combo can feel slightly imbalanced. Not a lot but you might want to consider this.

Whatever you choose you will see a substantial improvement on the old 5D.
 
Maybe a second hand 5d3? Not sure what they go for but it may well come down when the new pixel minsters come out in May. Depends how quickly you want to do this. Love my 5d3. Have you had either of your target cameras in your hand? Just a few thoughts. Hope you find the one for you.

I haven't held either but know photographers who have both. I think even a second hand 5d3 is out of budget :-( It has been a thought however. I love my 5d and worked it out really quickly following my original 450d! It's tough !

Thanks for this - and really helpful. I love my prime lenses so a big lens on the 6d wouldn't make much difference to me. I think I am swaying to the 6d. I don't want to confuse the matter by looking at other bodies? Or should I?! ;-)
 
Unless you can afford a second user 5D mk3 then I think the two bodies on your short list are the right ones for you to consider.
 
To me switching from a 5D mk1 the other year the 5D2 didn't add a huge amount over the 5D1, still suffered the same focus system, boons were the slightly higher ISO, live view & movie mode, and the latter isn't really a factor.

6D at least added a few extra focus points, much better high ISO performance, and the wifi & GPS aspects, and weight saving.

Need to do an 18months longer impressions, but pretty much stand by that, love the GPS for recording the days landscapes shoot (and the GPS log), battery life is just freaking immense.

This is brilliant - thank you. Will take a closer look. 6d looking promising. Also wanting to purchase the 35mm

Yeah, combined with the 35mm F2 it makes a nice light discreet walkabout. It isn't critically sharp in the corners, but it was £140.
