Hey, I am an amateur photographer, (verging into the world of professional photography not just yet though!) and I have a Nikon D40 with a standard lens, external flash and a macro lens. I am wanting to upgrade to a better camera, as I am taking a lot more photos at gigs and getting a lot of work published, anybody any reccomendations?

Hi and welcome to the forum

The logical step would be to stay with Nikon as you already have some equipment, therefore, go for the camera in that range that suits your budget. Go to a shop and try a few out before making a final decision as you may find a smaller one more suitable, leaving you a little more budget for a new or better lens :)

I am not that familiar with the Nikon range, assuming you want to stick with Nick.

If you like doing Giggs go for a camera with a high Max ISO rating. The Nikon range has a few of these bodies < £1000.

e.g. D5000 ISO 3200 (+ Hi 6400 equivalent)

But you will need to check out the reviews in terms of low light performance and noise handling.
