I have a Nikon D90 at the moment and its a good camera but I thought I would upgrade and hopefully get something a little better at the high ISO levels as I find the D90 has a fair bit of noise at 1600-32000

I have been looking at

Nikon D5100
Nikon D7000
Sony DSLR ?
Pentax DSLR ? (I read good reviews on the K-R and K-5)

Am I right that the D5100 has the same sensor as the D7000 so the extra expense of the D7000 is for a few extra bits like front and back command wheel (like that on my D90)

I read that the Nikon D7000 has a fair bit of noise/grain at higher ISO levels

Is there a Sony that can take Nikon lenses or did I imagine that ?

Anyone recommend me a DSLR that is good at high ISO and is around the £500-£700 mark :thinking:
 
I wouldn't go to a d5100. Although it has a the d7000 sensor it would be a downgrade from the d90 regarding features and would likely frustrate you. To be honest i would stick with the d90 for a few months and wait for the d400, There is little difference between the d90 and d7000 iso performance. From memory dxo give the d90 a 800 iso noise ceiling the d7000 1100 its less than half a stop, if you haven't already got them i recommend faster lenses, much better money spent.

That's if a d400 is coming, it should be but there's no guarantees until its announced :thumbs:
 
Well my D90 is good don't get me wrong I was just looking for something with a little bit extra ability in very low light. I sometimes find when the ISO gets cranked up and the auto ISO on the D90 likes to crank it up the noise can be a little to much for me.

I read the D7000 has excellent ISO abilities but if its a sideways move then maybe I should save my money for now and see what comes out next or keep saving for the D600 like I originally planned
 
I think the d600 is probably the best way forwards. The d7000 is fairly ok with noise until you pass 3200. The images still look fairly clean, but once you start cropping (even a very minimal crop) the noise becomes apparant very quickly.

I've trodden a similar path and am upgrading the d90 this week. The d600 looks to be a very good choice, although I was sorely tempted by a second hand d700. Ended up with a d800!

The d90 is pretty solid up to 1000 iso (if I knew more about photoshop I suspect I could push it further). I took this at iso 1000 with a quick LR edit. Not perfect by any means but came out ok?

Yeah the D800 looks nice but at the moment I cannot afford to pay the price of a car for a camera

Think at moment I will stick with trusty D90 until something else I can afford comes out or save for D600

Looking at your options, do you prefer the smaller body ?

If not, then the D700 is the one to go for surely ? Seems the logical choice if better high ISO is the priority and you can't stretch to the D600.
 
I changed from the D90 to a D700, best move ever !!!.

Yeah I have been looking at the D700 but why is the price still relatively so high when compared to the D600. The D600 and D700 look to be about the same price
