Currently have a D40 but have found myself looking at newer gear mainly the D5100 as I should have some spare cash in a couple of months.
There's two things I'm pondering,first do I just change the body or sell the D40 with the kit lens and get the body with the vr equivalent kit lens or the 18-105(although 'uncle ken' seems to rate the smaller lens more)
Secondly would a second-hand D5000 be as good for a bit less cash;the temptation though is to get as good and up to date camera as possible while I have the cash.
Should say I have a 40mm micro and 55-300 dx Nikkors.

Oh and I mostly shoot garden/plant shots with some bike racing when I get the chance.
 
Have you thought about looking into a S/H D90.
 
I also reckon you might enjoy a S/H D90 more than a D5000.

If you always shoot in auto mode then the D5000 may be the best choice however if you fancy learning new tricks then a D90 is great cam to progress with.

I moved from a D60 to a D90 and learned so much with my D90 thanks to it's ease of use and great functionality.
 
I'd say go feet first - d300 or d300s ;)
but thats because I've only played with a d90 and found it.... lacking, in comparison.

However the d300 is quite a bit heavier, but is weather proofed.

A decent used version would be worth getting (in my opinion) and gives you a lot to play with.

The d90 and 300 have inbuilt motors so that opens the older af lenses from ebay/used stores.

If you have a meet going on locally you could see whether there are any there and handle them (owners permission of course!) to see how they feel.... same goes for the d5000 type cameras.

Colleague here had a d40 and upgraded to d7k... loves it!

If you can afford it get the D300s, the D90 will be good but you will always wonder "what if I'd got the D300s"!

Or save some cash and go for the D300 unless you really need an extra memory card slot. The rest of the difference are minimal and the video on the D300S is terrible so no reason to buy one for that.
 
D90 on e-bay at the moment only half a dozen miles from where I live for collection only so I'll keep an eye on that £275 start and with only 23,700 actuation's.

Missed that but a low count D300 may be available(crosses fingers)
 
I might have missed it but did anyone ask what you want from the camera? I am not sure the D300 is the best bet really. If you need a lot of external controls and very good build ok fair enough but the sensor is oldish and it looks it and you have to content with a much heavier bulkier camera than the one you have now. In your position I'd try and get a D5100.
 
I'd say go for the d90 over the d300. Would be a big enough jump. I upgraded to a d90 from a d60 and now have a d300. The d300 is a lump compared to the d90 and find I chose the d90 over the d300 if I'm going any distance. don't get me wrong the d300 is the better camera and there are situations where i chose it over the d90.
