New Camera, New to Photography

I'm new to all this and have a little money to blow around 1k

I have played around with a few mid - pro cameras and like the nikon d7000 best.

I know nothing about lenses and was wondering if someone could point me in the right direction into a good lens to buy.

Also, I am interested in a remote shutter, tripod case and other bits and pieces I might need.

I'm going travelling and want to take some great snaps.

Another Nikon Fan:thumbs:. Don't forget that memory cards arn't included in the price of any new camera , so allow your budget for that. As for a general walkabout lens I would suggest something in the range of 24 -120mm picked up as used to keep your costs down. Thats the lens I used the most on my trip to the USA recently and covered most things. Of course it all depends on what you intend to take photos of which would be the decider, but this link may help in what is out there as a rough guide.

Anything that catches my eye / inspires me.

I am new to all this and would need something that is pretty much good for everything.

I was looking at the following camera

60d, 600d, and nikon 7000

I felt the cannons were cheap and light whereas the nikon felt solid and robust.

I am also interested in the cannon 7d.

I will also be playing around with some video.

I have booked a photography course for september too.

I heard tamron lenses are really good value for money.

I don't mind paying more as long as I am getting value.

I have a tamron 70-300 and yes or the money it does the job but tamron ain't built to last (well they feel like they ain't)

that's because you have there El Cheapo answers to a telephoto lens. If you get the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 you'd certainly feel the difference, it's a nice and solid lens with totally immense performance for it's price and is pretty much identical the the Canon 17-55mm and Nikon 17-55mm variants! :)

That would be why then lol. If they are the same price as the Canon what would make me want to choose the tamron over the Canon?
 
have you thought about buying a 2nd hand body, something like a d300(bigger than the d7000, better built than the d7000, more af pointd than the d7000, but not as good at high iso but no probs upto iso 3200, a d300 can be had for about £600/700 which leaves you more for glass and bits.
and glass is dependent on what you wanna shoot.
 
Think for the money D7000 offers nice features. But getting tripod etc with the 1k budget will be quite tight.

And they really don't or at least mine didn't. Used to have 17-50, just under two years. Zoom ring failed and front element screws came undone.
 
I'm not so sure, I'm not really in for the headache of buying second hand.

I can claim this as a business expense regardless and I like the idea of having a warranty and 14 day no questions asked return etc.

I am not clued up enough to buy second hand. This is my first camera.
 
If you fancy the D7000, have a look at the D7000 thread for autofocus issues. I own it happily (now) but there can be problems to overcome.
If you go for the D7000, it won't leave much for lenses. I thoroughly recommend you get a 50mm f1.8, either the older 'D' or the newer (and reputedly better) 'G'. It will be a cheap introduction to good quality glass (really). The results will delight you. By the time you're bored with what that can achieve, you will probably have more money burning a hole in your pocket.

Or even the 35mm f1.8 and let your feet do the the zooming in and out
 
I've been away for a while, but I have come back and need to order this camera today.

I'm going with the d7000.

Just wondering which lens to get:

Should I go for a Nikon or a cheaper third party lens like Sigma.

I am also interested in getting a tripod, a remote and quality microphone to record pro video footage. Mainly interviews with people.

My total budget for all this is around 1200.

Although it's a little pricey.

Any thoughts?

I somehow doubt the Tamron would be identical to the Canon and Nikon performance wise, could be wrong though

fair play if it does, I have a Sigma 24-70 2.8 which I use on my D90, Its a great lens but does get a bit soft wide open, I've heard the Nikon does not suffer from this but its twice the price.
 
Ok well that's the lens sorted.

Any ideas on other stuff I will need?

Tripod, Microphone, Remote Shutter, Filter, Flashes ?
