New camera - Nikon D90?

Yes
Hello,

After considering buying Canon 50D and Nikon D90 now I am on verge of buying Nikon D90. All the advices and reviews and a short trip to Jessops, suggest that image wise they both are good and D90 gives video as additional feature. Initially my needs are mostly portraits, landscape and high usage in low-light and indoors. I will think about upgrade if my needs changes in future. In terms of video, I don't care if it is HD or SD as long as it is there only because other half wants it (she has a pocket HD camcorder with her and still doesn't want to carry that :bang:). Anyway I am looking for assurance on two points here:

1) My decision to buy D90 purely for good photos is reasonable and I am not missing a lot by not buying 50D? Please consider the other factors such as skills, type of lenses etc similar in both scenarios.

2) The other more important question is after been on few sites and other places, I noticed that there are less "used" Nikon gear for sell compare to Canon. Is this true? I am only asking it because if it will cause an issue in upgrading to lenses in future in terms of costs?

Many thanks.

As a happy D90 user, I can certainly recommend it.

Regarding the issue of 2nd gear, don't forget it's not all Nikon, lens are made by Sigma, Tamron and others and some excellent deals are, quite often, found in these very forums.

very happy new D90 user here  there's plenty of Nikon gear, loads in fact, and the D90 will AF with the older non AF-S lenses giving an even wider choice of new and second hand gear

Thanks. Yes I know you could always buy third party lenses but what I meant was more of these + manufacturer made are on sale for Canon more than Nikon. Considering the demand-supply issue, buying used Nikon gear may be slighly more expansive than Canon. Isn't it?

Just to chuck a spanner in. I have had both a D90 and a 50D. Both are great cameras. The video on the d90 is quite clunky to use. No autofocus, so it wont be like a camcorder.
The 50D is chunkier to hold, and feels more "pro". I think the autofocus and High ISO between thre two are very close.
Even though Im with Canon now, I still prefer the ergonomics of Nikon cameras, but thats just my personal preference.

I think Canon have the edge on lenses at the moment, Nikon seem to missing a few key lenses in thier range. (an affordable 70-200 for example)

I dont think you will disapointed with either one really. I guess it just comes down to which you can get cheapest.

Well I have tried how a Nikon D90 feels in hand and found it great. I couldn't find any 50D as all the Jessops' stores near me have discontinued in store. I however checked 550D and 60D (more chunky). Jessops guy was trying to sell me off the 60D but it was way too high for my budget. Regarding Nikon D90's video, I actually don't mind the quality as I don't like taking videos anyway, however it will keep the other half happy I think :|. I am tempted to buy those refurbished ones from ebay as I guess buying a refurbished ones with 3 months' warranty is as good as (if not better) buying second hand with no warranty. I am still biased towards Canon but lack of video is only thing stopping me to buy this.

I'm choosing between a D90 and 550D. Currently borrowing a friend's D90 and really like it so leaning towards that.

If you want video, the 550D would have better video than D90.

Having used Nikon in one form or another for 40 years and recently got int DSLR with a D90 I can't fault it. As for availlabillity of glass I have never found a problem finding what I need either SH or new, perhaps the amount of Cannon on the SH market says something about Cannon, I don't know or care, I am happy with Nikon. I doubt you would be dissapointed with a D90 or Nikon lenses they have my vote.

D90 is an awesome camera, totally competent and able to produce quality pictures in almost any circumstances. Totally recommended, with no hesitation.

The D7000 is looking to be even better.....

According to Cnet, D7000 will be approx £1100. Tempting but too high for my budget. Yeah you are right, features are looking very good.

Regarding buying off the bay with 3 months warranty, personally I'd prefer to buy used equipment on these forums. As long as the seller has a bit of rep. on here, I know that the gear will be well looked after.

But each to their own.

D7000 will be approx £1100

Talk to Stuart at Digital Depot, he is doing the body for less than that. Once the initial euphoria has died down I would guess the body will be about £825

I am also deciding between the Canon 550D and the Nikon D90 and leaning towards the Nikon D90

I did also look at the D5000 but the D90 seems better all round

One local shop told me the D90 was discontinued and was 'old technology' and I should go for the new D3000 .. yeah right I have £1300 in my pocket

Have to say having bought a tamron 17-50 Di 2.8 WOAH !

for the £250 I paid for it the difference it made to Iamge quality was amazing so go fer a D90 and save money on lenses but the moeny saved over the Nikon equivalent into a box and when you look in a year or two you an upgrade to the D300 or D7000....... simples

I am assuming prices will come down for D90 when D7000 hit the stores/online retailers. But then again, who knows!

I think it will be quite a while before the D90 drops significantly in price.

When the D7000 hits the shelves, it's still going to be substantial more expensive than the D90 and by the time it hits the current price of the D90, the D90 will be hard to find.

So, my advice, don't hesitate, bit the bullet and get yourself a D90.
