Hey everyone

At the weekend, I went out with a local pro tog to take some portraits of a local singer. We all had a great time and got some lovely images and I got to play with the tog's canon 5Dmk2 WOW I love it!! I now really want to upgrade my kit from panasonic to canon and was wondering which one people think I should go for? Not really limiting it to budget as would rather save and get a camera to keep for a while then settle for second best because of money! I mainly take portraits so any lenses to go with it to boot would be great too.
Look forward to hearing what you all have to say about the different models :)

A rough idea of budget is handy though. The other thing is that if you buy a half decent body such as the 50D or 450D then spend more on glass this will give you better results than spending more on the body and less on glass. Glass also holds it's value better and will stay with you as you upgrade though the inevitable bodies.

Anyway good luck and I am sure a Canon expert will be along soon to be more help :)

Hey Darren, thank you for your advice, will definetly bare that in mind its a good point! To be honest i have no clue with budget so would love some guidance with it! Im very lucky that santa always brings me something very nice that is camera related each year so maybe something can go on that list?? ;)

If you liked the 5D Mk II so much, then get that, but bear in mind its full frame, so your lens choice is slightly more limited than a crop.
Failing that, a 7D, the new 60D, or as has been wisely suggested a slightly older body like a 40D or 50D with the best glass you can get.
On a crop, the 17-55 f/2.8, the 70-200 f/4 or f/2.8 and a prime lens like the 50mm f/1.8 are a pretty good kit to cover all bases.

If you don't put a budget on it, it's hard to recommend things.

For a 5DII and a couple of decent lenses to make best use of it, you're looking at maybe £3000 buying new.

I recommend a 40D. Good price at the moment for what you get.
Then get a 50mm f1.8 lens and away you go.

You can even have a play with mine to see if you like it first.

First thing would be what did u like about the 5DII? The lay out of controls? Pretty standard right across the cannon range. The IQ? Hard to beat a full frame camera on this, the images from a full frame camera are quite distinctive IMO. What sort of photography are you into?

Hey everyone thank you for your quick responses, ok first of all i have been comparing models online and i quite like the look of the 550d? Any thoughts on that model?
As to what I liked about the 5d2 i loved the layout and as said i know this is pretty standard but i think going to full frame is quite scary as its a hugely expensive bit of kit and im still only amateur so think thats out of the window!
Stuart thanks for the recommendation, how are you getting on with yours? Also did you start going to the camera club as im actually going on wednesday with a friend?? So would be cool to meet and get a feel for the 40D.
As for type of photography i am mainly into portraits, weddings etc just love capturing peoples emotions so dont really do alot of the other genres to be honest. Does that help at all?? lol

Ive just purchased a 50d,24~70mm 2.8,but am using a 5d this weekend fantastic piece of kit,i suppose its similar to Hi-Fi systems, you put most into your source (say CD Player) and less on the amp/speakers,spend a fortune on an amp and mediocre CD player, amp only exaggerates short Cummings in source (CD),not quite the same but does explain my method
So Less on body more on Glass.it is impressive to see how much more your lens pull in on a full frame body though

Yes. I'd spend money on lenses and plan to get a full frame later if you end up getting serious.

If you get some real good, fast glass now, you'll love it now, then love it even more if/when you put it on a full frame body some time in the future.

The 40D has almost the exact same layout as the 5dII.
It's a little smaller but not massively, but bare in mind the viewfinder will be smaller than on the 5D (since the mirror is smaller).
