New Canon 10-22 dust/imperfections?

Yes
Just received my new Canon 10-22mm. Great i thought until i opened it up and looked through to a light source and noticed 3 specks within the elements. Its hard to capture but it can be described as being bright white or black depending on the angle of view.

For example if you were to tilt it at an angle to a light source they show up as 'dead' spots, ie. black. Tilting it to another direction they show up as refracting the light ie. very bright spots.

Should I return it? Take it to a Canon repair centre of some sort (do they exist)? or live with it?

The first option being a major pain in the proverbial, second one not ideal and the third posing also as bad option because my resale could be hampered and would perhaps affect the IQ? I cant check the IQ as I dont have a card reader with me.

Any thoughts to this?

Thanks in advance:)

If you have paid for a new and therefore perfect lens I would be returning it at their cost for an immediate replacement.

M.

I would not mess with it,i would inform them of the problem & arrange to return it to them.:)

Take it back, it will always bother you otherwise and should expect a pristine lens when new

if it's just a couple of specs of dust, then i'm afraid this is normal and won't affect image quality.

there is no guarantee that the new lens won't have new dust inside either.

i got a new 55-250 ef-s is lens from jessops once
carried it back to my car where i opened it to have a good look over it and found a rather large black speck of something inside on the front element
i took it back and they said they could send it off to canon to which i replied you can do what you want with it after you have refunded me my cash
went off and got another one elsewhere as they had no others in stock

My 24-105L has a tiny white bit of dust in it. As it's never been serviced or repaired it must have been in there since new. I must admit it doesn't bother me too much and has never appeared in an image.
If it ever needs repair I'll ask that they remove it, until then I ain't bothered :D

Seems more votes to return it! Ive emailed them to see what they say. Ive decided what tripod and head i want now so they better treat me nicely! No doubt I'll also be getting a 50mm f1.4 too :/

...this is not a a good way to spend my money :(

honestly - have you taken a picture with it, does it show up in its intended use. They will probably shift with time and really think you are causing yourself heart ache over what could be nothing.

As said there is no gurantee it will be dust free on the next and the fact that its not a sealed lens and even though you have a sealed body you will still get dust ingress over time.

sorry if that comes across harsh, but its not unreasonable IMO for it to have a few specs

Would you accept a brand new car with dents??

If its new, it should be perfect, just because "it might get dust over time" doesnt mean you should put up with it on a brand new lens. If more people sent stuff back that wasnt perfect, maybe the lens manufacturers would employ better QC.

even if you dont mind, when you come to sell it, someone else more picky will mind. for a new item, i'd get it exchanged.

And what would that do to the cost?

It's not a sealed lens. Dust can and will get in, and it will have zero effect on pictures.

It will yes, but it shouldnt do straight out of the factory..
You might aswell buy second hand and save some money if you accept a new one with dust in it.
I cant understand why anyone would accept sub standard goods.

I think the point people are trying to make is that dust is inevitable, be it over time or from a factory. That's unless you want to pay a premium for your lenses to be made in clean rooms worthy of a satellite factory.

Lenses are made in factories worthy of satellite factories!

If you watch the videos on Youtube of one of the Canon factories, you will see how it looks. It looks how I expect a precision lens factory to look. A lens with specs of dust in it being released from the factory is inexcusable IMO.

People will quite happily jump on Sigma's back when one of their lenses comes out far from perfect, yet it seems ok for canon to release dirty lenses?

Again, just because its ineveitable, doesnt mean it should be sold like it.
Its ineveitable that your milk will go off, but you wouldnt expect to buy a pint of gone off milk, its inevitable that your car tyres will wear down, but you wouldnt expect to buy a set of new tyres with 2mm tread left. Its inevitable that your camera shutter will at some point fail, but you wouldnt expect to buy a brand new camera and have the shutter not work.

Im afraid that argument really doesnt stand up.

Think we need to know more about its provenance before commenting further

Could be a customer return, was it new and sealed or possibly a refurb, where did it come from?

Just playing devils advocate here and would like to ascertain the full facts before we slate anyones quality control or retail practises

to be honest i think i would accept it, if it doesnt do what its supposed to then its a fault (i.e. imperfections in the final image), you may go through quite a lot of returns in the process...

your reference to car with dents is exagerated its more like a new car with a 5 miles on the clock, does it mean the car is not brand new?

I have had a sigma lens that came with a dust spec in it, i waited till it shifted naturally! no harm no foul, never noticed a difference.

By the way i guess you have also bought a temerature/humidity controlled cabinet to stop mould ingress as well.

mountain and molehill come to mind!

The car and mileage isnt comparable. Everyone knows new cars come with some mileage as they legally have to have the PDI. You expect a new car to have some miles, you dont expect a brand new lens to have dust in it.

Would you accept a brand new camera with 100 shutter actuations??

Another vote here to send it back.
A couple of tiny dust motes are one thing: noticable specks of debris - which is what this sounds like, is just unacceptable in a new lens.
In fact while I'd possibly accept a few dust specks inside a 2nd hand lens, I'd not put up with larger (paint) flecks.
Sometimes you get the black 'paint' from the edges of the elements flaking slightly - this might be an occurrance of that.

(Under) 15 miles delivery-mileage is one thing - scratches in the paint are another...

My worry would be exactly how the dust got in there in the first place. Whilst not impossible for it to happen at the factory, I'd imagine Canon take pretty good care to package their lenses in a clean environment to avoid such problems.

I'd be more concerned that the lens has actually already been used by someone else at some point and for that reason alone would send it back.
