New Canon 24 and 28 Primes

Has anyone tried the new f2.8 24mm and 28mm Canon primes, the ones with IS? I'm looking for a prime for my 6D (my first ever prime) and liked the look of these.
 
I for one question the need for IS in wide angles. This and the fact they are new seems to add a lot to the price. You could nearly get a 2nd hand 24 1.4 mk II or 35mm 1.4 for the same money. I'm sure they're very nice, and nice and light and small too, but at nearly £600 each, well.... FWIW the older 24mm f2.8 micro motor lens is really good and can often be found for around £200.
 
I have a 28mm f1.8 prime for my 5D2 and when using it I never feel like I I would benefit from a prime at that focal range with IS to make things easier.
Nothing that a small dose of ISO upage can't sort out.

That is unless you are shooting in extreme conditions where ISO bumpage won't help that much.

I did look at the 28mm f1.8 but all the reviews I've ready are fairly critical of it?
 
I looked at 35mm f2 IS, decided for that price, it's not worth it and bought the old non-IS.

Also considered 28 f1.8 non-IS, but didn't like the reviews, it's not as sharp as 35/2.

Is the lens going to be for landscape? or general low-light shooting? why such a wide angle for first prime?
 
I ignored reviews of the 28mm f1.8 as they were very mixed and instead looked at example shots.
I was happy enough with the results and I'm happy with what I capture with it.

It'll be for low light shooting such as buildings at night, indoor shots, etc, hence the need for width.

Also want to just experience walking around with only a prime lens on the camera.

Yes, you can raise the ISO when using a non IS lens but you can do the same with an IS lens and therefore IS will always allow you to shoot with lower ISO/shutter speed.

Personally I wish all my f1.4's were IS lenses but they're not and being a Canon user I don't have in body IS either. At least if there are IS lenses customers have the choice...

Having said all that I'm not a massive fan of f2.8 non macro primes unless they are compact and light or cheap or have some other sexy factor as a f2.8 zoom might be more flexible.

If you want the width and IS then they do look like there the best options in terms of sharpness at the moment, only the new 24-70mm IS seems to potentially offer better performance and compaired to that the primes do start to look cheaper. None of the reviews I'v seen have been critical of their performance, only their price.

I do wonder whether we might be an UWA zoom with IS at some stage though ala the Nikon 16-35mm VR although I spose the signs point to such a lens probabley not being very cheap either.
